Classic Busan to Host “Vienna New Year Week”

Classic Busan announced that a special week-long event, “Vienna New Year Week,” will be held at Busan Concert Hall, with performances scheduled for January 31 at 5:00 p.m. and February 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The event is expected to offer Busan audiences a meaningful opportunity to experience world-class music up close through a Philharmonic Ensemble performance, featuring the authentic sound of the Vienna Philharmonic and Europe’s musical traditions in a chamber music setting, as well as a performance by The Philharmonic Brass, consisting mainly of brass players from the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic.

The Philharmonic Ensemble—carrying on the history and tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the resident orchestra of the Vienna State Opera—will deliver deep musical inspiration to Busan audiences through a high-caliber chamber music performance featuring world-renowned musicians.

The Philharmonic Ensemble is a chamber group founded in 2013 by Vienna Philharmonic violinist Shkëlzen Doli. It began as a small ensemble centered on strings and piano, and has since expanded steadily to become a traditional 13-member chamber ensemble encompassing strings, winds, and percussion.

The concert program is broadly curated around Austria’s Viennese musical tradition, ranging from waltzes, polkas, operettas, and operatic masterpieces to representative works of the 20th century.

The program includes operetta overtures, waltzes, and polkas by Johann Strauss II, elegant waltzes and operetta arias by Franz Lehár, and key scenes from Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute. It also features masterpieces spanning eras, including Shostakovich’s Waltz No. 2, Fauré’s Pavane, and Tchaikovsky’s Sentimental Waltz.

In addition, works where classical music meets tango—such as Carlos Gardel’s Por Una Cabeza and Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion—will showcase the Philharmonic Ensemble’s flexible and sophisticated musical world. Structured in two parts, the performance is expected to convey the Vienna Philharmonic’s distinctive elegance and vitality, along with a sense of popular familiarity.

Another highlight will be a festival-like program that traces a celebratory journey from opera overtures to film music, presented through a spectacular brass sound created by brass members of leading orchestras overseas, centered on the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic.

The Philharmonic Brass, offering both the authority of classical tradition and widely accessible enjoyment, brings together 20 of the world’s finest brass musicians, including Matthias Höfs, a world-renowned German trumpeter, along with leading players from the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic.

The program consists of Part I featuring opera overtures such as Verdi’s Nabucco Overture and The Force of Destiny, and Part II featuring selections such as Harry Potter and a Star Wars medley—allowing audiences to fully enjoy a festive musical journey delivered through brilliant brass sound.
