Busan Metropolitan City Selects 33 Recipients for This Year’s “Proud Construction Award”

□ Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it has selected a total of 33 recipients for this year’s “Proud Construction Award.” ○ The City selected a total of 33 awardees—18 construction firms and 15 construction professionals—based on recommendations from the City and construction-related associations and academic societies, recognizing those who worked to revitalize the local construction industry despite challenging conditions in the local construction market. ○ Of these, the City held an award ceremony for six individuals recommended by the City (three construction firms* and three construction professionals**). The ceremony took place on Dec. 22 in the office of the Vice Mayor for Future Innovation.

□ The key achievements of the six recipients who attended the ceremony are as follows. ○ [Construction firms] ▲Geumoh General Construction Co., Ltd., a local Busan-based company founded in 2001, has built numerous affordable housing and small- to mid-sized residential projects over the past 24 years. ▲Kumho Construction Co., Ltd. ranked 24th nationwide in the 2025 construction capability evaluation in the civil engineering and architecture sectors; it registered 64 specialized construction firms in Busan as partner companies and concluded 120 contracts over the past three years. ▲Buwon GFC Co., Ltd. was selected as an excellent company for its performance in the City’s subcontract management operations at construction sites.

○ [Construction professionals] ▲Lee Young-gu, Branch Director at GS Engineering & Construction Corp., institutionalized the regular operation of the City’s “Busan Construction Firms–Major Construction Companies Co-Prosperity Day.” ▲Ju Dong-hyeon, Professor at Korea Polytechnics (Busan Campus), successfully carried out the entrusted operation of the “Busan Metropolitan City Construction Technology Training Institute” by expanding technical training required at construction sites and contributing to the training and development of construction professionals while serving as Director of the Institute. ▲Bae Cheol-gu, Senior Manager at Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., contributed to sound project execution through thorough schedule and quality control by participating in highly complex worksites, including residential environment improvement projects within the City.

□ The City plans to recommend the 33 awardees as ▲“Outstanding Business Leaders” organized by the Economic Policy Division and ▲“Outstanding Construction Engineers” organized by the Technical Review Division. ○ “Outstanding Business Leaders” will be eligible, for three years from the date the certificate is awarded, to receive support through the City’s SME working capital and development fund as well as special support under credit guarantee programs. ○ “Outstanding Construction Engineers” may, for two years from the date the certificate is awarded, be recommended as members of the City’s Construction Technology Deliberation Committee, be invited to major City events, and receive administrative and financial support.

□ Since 2006, the City has presented the “Proud Construction Award” annually to discover and honor outstanding construction firms and professionals, with the aim of boosting morale and instilling pride among local construction companies. Including this year, a total of 478 recipients (288 construction firms and 190 construction professionals) have been recognized.

□ Meanwhile, as of December this year, the local subcontracting rate for government-funded construction projects reached 84%, and the City plans to continue and proactively promote the local construction industry next year by introducing a new pilot program to support fees for subcontract payment guarantee insurance, among other initiatives. ○ The City made various efforts this year to raise the local subcontracting rate. In November, it hosted the “Busan Construction Future Conference,” inviting CEOs of major construction companies to overcome the downturn in the construction market and explore ways to foster mutual growth with local construction firms. In addition, from April to October, it expanded and promoted “Scale Up” tailored consulting to strengthen the capabilities of local small and medium-sized specialized construction firms (35 companies).

○ Furthermore, next year the City will implement the “Pilot Program to Support Fees for Subcontract Payment Guarantee Insurance.” Through this initiative, the City aims to ensure stability in subcontracting transactions and establish a fair subcontracting order, thereby promoting revitalization of the local construction industry.

□ Seong Heui-yeob, Vice Mayor for Future Innovation, stated, “I sincerely appreciate the hard work of this year’s recipients of the ‘Proud Construction Award.’ I ask for your continued consideration so that more local companies can participate in construction projects.” He added, “Busan Metropolitan City will also do its utmost to revitalize the local construction industry in cooperation with the construction sector.”
