Busan Metropolitan City Conducts On-Site Safety Guidance and Inspections at City-Commissioned Construction Sites to Prevent Serious Industrial Accidents

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will conduct safety guidance and inspections at 22 major city-commissioned construction sites through February 10 next year.

The inspections will cover 22 major ongoing civil engineering and architectural construction projects commissioned by the City (16 sites under the Construction Headquarters, 5 sites under the Busan Water Authority, and 1 site under the Construction Safety Testing Office).

Inspection items include: verification of fall-prevention measures and mandatory use of personal protective equipment; confirmation of safety measures for eight major risk factors—scaffolding, roofs, ladders, aerial work platforms, steel structures, vehicle-mounted construction machinery, mixed-operation worksites, and collision-prevention devices—associated with the three most common types of construction accidents (falls, entrapment, and collisions); assessment of facility safety management practices; and evaluation of whether other occupational safety and health activities are being properly implemented.

In addition, the guidance and inspections will be carried out in parallel through: joint inspections involving relevant agencies—such as the Busan Regional Office of Employment and Labor and the Busan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency—together with relevant City departments including the Serious Accident Prevention Division and the Job and Labor Division; and independent inspections conducted by each commissioning department.

Based on the inspection results, the City will immediately correct minor issues on site, while continuously managing major risk factors until corrective measures are fully implemented. The City also plans to share the inspection results with relevant departments to ensure thorough prevention of serious industrial accidents.

Kim Gi-hwan, Head of the City Safety Office, stated, “These guidance and inspections are measures aimed at preventing serious industrial accidents and creating safe and pleasant City worksites,” adding, “We will ensure that all city-commissioned construction sites strictly adhere to fundamental safety management principles to create an urban environment where citizens can feel safe.”
