Mayor Park Heong-joon Visits the Choryang I-eum Autonomous Commercial District in Dong-gu to Inspect the Progress of the Commercial District Revitalization Project

Busan Metropolitan City announced that Mayor Park Heong-joon visited the Choryang I-eum Autonomous Commercial District around Choryang Traditional Market at 4:00 p.m. on the 19th, directly checked the progress of the commercial district revitalization project, toured the site, and spent time communicating with merchants.

This visit was carried out as part of on-site inspection and management of the first-year progress of the Choryang I-eum Autonomous Commercial District revitalization project. It was designed to directly hear difficulties experienced by merchants and commercial district cooperative officials, as well as their suggestions for improvement, during the project implementation process.

Based on the findings from this visit, Busan Metropolitan City plans to review improvement measures for any insufficient or necessary areas for supplementation during project implementation, and to continue management efforts across the overall project process.

The Choryang I-eum Autonomous Commercial District was designated as a commercial district revitalization zone in 2024 and has been 추진하고 있다. It has been promoting a five-year commercial district revitalization project from 2025, with a total of KRW 5 billion in support.

This year, as the first year of the project, efforts have focused on establishing a foundational execution system for commercial district revitalization. Key initiatives include forming a commercial district revitalization steering council, improving the market environment, developing specialized products and brands for the district, and building the I-eum Commercial District Dongbaek Plus system—primarily preparatory projects aimed at laying the groundwork for full-scale implementation in the future.

Starting next year, from the second year onward, Busan Metropolitan City plans to fully implement customized projects tailored to the characteristics of the commercial district, based on the outcomes of the first year and the established operational foundation. The city will promote the revitalization project according to a phased implementation plan, focusing on expanding merchant participation and increasing tangible benefits.

On the day of the visit, Mayor Park held a meeting with merchants and commercial district cooperative officials to exchange opinions on the progress of the revitalization project and major pending issues. He then toured project sites, including Choryang Traditional Market, and met merchants in person to listen to their difficulties.

Based on on-site findings and collected feedback, Busan Metropolitan City plans to strengthen support in cooperation with district and county governments and the autonomous commercial district cooperative, so that the revitalization project can provide practical assistance to merchants.

Meanwhile, in the Choryang Traditional Market area on the same day, one of the detailed projects under the revitalization initiative—the “2025 Choryang I-eum Autonomous Commercial District Light & Beer Festival”—and the proclamation ceremony designating the Choryang I-eum Autonomous Commercial District as a Dongbaek Plus Specialized Street were held together.

The “2025 Choryang I-eum Autonomous Commercial District Light & Beer Festival” was held over two days, on the 19th and 20th, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. To mark the year-end season, the festival featured a food court combining various market foods and beer, as well as merchant-participatory events such as the “Choryang Chip Coin Event.”

The proclamation ceremony for the designation of the Choryang I-eum Autonomous Commercial District as a Dongbaek Plus Specialized Street was organized to promote usage and activation of affiliated stores following the addition of the Dongbaek Plus Specialized Street feature to the Dongbaekjeon app. Events such as Dongbaek Plus usage verification were held in conjunction.

These events were promoted as part of the commercial district revitalization project to expand merchant participation and attract visitors, while fostering a positive atmosphere in the local commercial area and highlighting the unique characteristics of the autonomous commercial district.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “Rather than focusing solely on short-term outcomes, it is important for commercial district revitalization projects to enhance brand value and expand value-based consumption.” He added, “Based on the difficulties heard on-site today, we will continue to provide the necessary support so that Choryang Traditional Market and the surrounding commercial districts can experience tangible change.”
