Busan Metropolitan City AI Committee Visits Shipbuilding Manufacturers to Advance AI Transformation in the Shipbuilding Industry

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced today (the 19th) that it will visit shipbuilding manufacturing companies located in the industrial complex in Gangseo-gu together with members of the Busan Metropolitan City AI Committee, and will hold the 4th Busan Metropolitan City AI Committee meeting at 2:00 p.m. at the conference room of the Busan Shipbuilding & Marine Equipment Cooperative in Gangseo-gu.

The meeting will be attended by members of the Busan Metropolitan City AI Committee, composed of AI experts from various sectors including industry, as well as approximately 30 representatives from shipbuilding manufacturing AI-related companies and organizations, including FoemDX Co., Ltd., AI Nation Co., Ltd., the Korea Association for Industrial Intelligence, the Busan Shipbuilding & Marine Equipment Cooperative, and the Busan Information Industry Promotion Agency.

This meeting was arranged to directly visit shipbuilding manufacturing companies in the industrial complex in Gangseo-gu, listen to on-site voices from the local shipbuilding manufacturing industry, and discuss directions for AI transformation and cooperation tasks in the shipbuilding manufacturing sector.

The main schedule includes on-site visits to shipbuilding manufacturing companies (Silla Metal Co., Ltd. → Wonkwang Valve Co., Ltd. → Panasia Co., Ltd. → Busan Shipbuilding & Marine Equipment Cooperative), followed by discussions on AI transformation cooperation tasks for the shipbuilding manufacturing industry and the formation of a dedicated task force.

During the on-site visits, participants will directly observe production sites of shipbuilding companies, which form the core manufacturing base of the Gangseo-gu industrial complex, and focus on concretizing the applicability of AI across the entire manufacturing process.

In particular, discussions will center on AI application tasks in the shipbuilding manufacturing sector, such as advancing quality control, optimizing processes, and strengthening workplace safety, while listening to companies’ difficulties and engaging in in-depth discussions on measures for on-site demonstrations and the establishment of workforce and data foundations.

The companies to be visited—Silla Metal Co., Ltd., Wonkwang Valve Co., Ltd., Panasia Co., Ltd., and the Busan Shipbuilding & Marine Equipment Cooperative—are key enterprises with global technological competitiveness in shipbuilding and marine equipment fields such as ship propellers, valves, and ballast water treatment systems*, and are evaluated as having high potential for AI transformation through initiatives such as the creation of a shipbuilding equipment cluster hub.

*Devices designed to prevent the destruction and disturbance of marine ecosystems caused by the movement of ballast water in ships.

Meanwhile, Busan Metropolitan City launched the Busan Metropolitan City AI Committee last September with the goal of becoming a “World-Class Marine AI Hub Busan.”

At the second committee meeting in October, discussions were held on AI transformation in the marine industry and job creation, while at the third committee meeting in November, the city continued discussions aimed at revitalizing the local economy and creating jobs by identifying AI transformation models centered on small business owners and the shipbuilding and marine sectors.

Jeong Na-young, Director General of the Future Technology Strategy Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, stated, “AI is the most practical innovation tool capable of simultaneously enhancing productivity, safety, and quality at shipbuilding manufacturing sites,” adding, “We will strengthen the competitiveness of shipbuilding manufacturing companies in the Gangseo-gu industrial complex through AI and foster the marine AI industry linked to shipbuilding manufacturing as a new growth engine for Busan.”
