Busan Metropolitan City to Host the “2025 Industry–Academia–Research Cooperation Performance Sharing Conference”

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold the “2025 Industry–Academia–Research Cooperation Performance Sharing Conference” today (the 17th) at 3:30 p.m. at The Westin Josun Busan.

The conference has been organized to share major achievements in industry–academia–research cooperation over the past year, present the policy vision for the coming year, and invigorate exchanges among stakeholders engaged in industry–academia–research collaboration.

Approximately 150 participants, including representatives from Busan Metropolitan City, universities, companies, and research institutes, will attend the event, which will proceed in the following order: the BB21plus (Brain Busan 21 plus) Academic Conference, awards ceremony for distinguished contributors, performance reports from Industry–Academia–Research Cooperation Centers, presentations of best practices, an industry–academia–research talk concert, and networking.

At the pre-event “BB21plus Academic Conference,” supervising professors and students from universities participating in industry–academia–research cooperation projects will gather to present outstanding research papers and share their views.

The BB21plus program provides outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in the region with specialized education and research opportunities in strategic industries designated by the city, with the aim of systematically nurturing highly skilled research personnel at the master’s and doctoral levels.

In particular, the program has continuously generated tangible outcomes through industry–academia collaboration, including joint research and development (R&BD), technology development, and patent registration involving companies and students. Presenting research results developed through academic curricula at this performance-sharing conference adds further significance to the event.

The “Industry–Academia–Research Talk Concert” will focus on discussions related to the University Innovation Research Park (I-URP) development project. In particular, as the city is strategically promoting the companion animal industry as a future growth sector, universities and relevant stakeholders will participate to vividly convey insights from the field.

The University Innovation Research Park (I-URP) project aims to establish industry–academia cooperation platforms that connect universities’ specialized fields with local industries by utilizing underused facilities on university campuses.

The industry–academia cooperation platform in the companion animal industry established at Silla University has drawn attention as a notable best practice. Ten companies and research institutes have moved into the platform, actively engaging in joint research and development (R&BD), prototype development, patent applications, and commercialization. In addition, the companion animal behavior correction center built within the platform has received a positive response from citizens who raise companion animals.

In addition to these programs, the event will include commendations for individuals who have contributed to promoting industry–academia–research cooperation, as well as awards for outstanding BB21plus project teams, exemplary students, and participating teams in the university student industry–academia–research idea competition.

Meanwhile, since the launch of the eighth popularly elected administration, Busan Metropolitan City has declared itself a “leading city for industry–academia–research cooperation.” The city has established the necessary foundations, including the creation of Industry–Academia–Research Cooperation Centers, and has systematically built a collaborative network by designating 100 branches.

Through cooperation among the city government, companies, and universities, Busan Metropolitan City has fostered an ecosystem that promotes talent development, joint research, and technology transfer, ensuring that these efforts lead to technological innovation and commercialization in regional industries.

With the full-scale implementation of the Regional Innovation-driven University Support System (RISE), the city plans to further concretize an industry–academia–research cooperation value chain in which collaboration among companies, universities, and industrial innovation leads to regional innovation.

Busan Metropolitan City intends to share this vision for industry–academia–research cooperation through the performance-sharing conference and to further strengthen the network among the key stakeholders who form the foundation of such cooperation.
