Busan Metropolitan City Announces Winners of the 13th Busan Beautiful Landscape Awards and Hosts Award Ceremony

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it selected four landscaping sites on November 18 as the winners of the 13th Busan Beautiful Landscape Awards.

This year’s competition was organized to promote “a happy garden city of integrity in Busan,” and to elevate the quality of landscaping and green spaces that shape the city’s urban character. The program recognizes and awards outstanding landscaping achievements within Busan.

From August 6 to September 12, a total of 14 public and private landscaping sites were submitted. On November 18, the judging committee—comprising internal and external experts—conducted a fair and rigorous evaluation, including document screening and on-site inspections, to select four finalists.

Evaluation criteria included contributions to climate change mitigation (e.g., heat island reduction), creativity of the project, harmony with surrounding areas, construction patterns and completeness, and integrity. Based on a comprehensive assessment, the committee finalized one Grand Prize winner, two Excellence Award winners, and one Merit Award winner.

The Grand Prize was awarded to Cheonghak Healing Garden in Yeongdo District, a former deteriorated urban drainage facility that was redesigned into a garden-style rest area. The site was highly praised for its well-executed layout, including multiple walking paths, an earthen barefoot trail, and dedicated exercise spaces. It also received strong evaluations for its diverse plant species, excellent landscape design, and support for various recreational uses such as exercise, relaxation, and contemplation.

Excellence Awards were given to Jurye Open Library in Sasang District, noted for its architectural harmony and outstanding design, and to Baekseok Changpa by Busan Metropolitan Corporation, recognized for its integration with coastal landscape values. The Merit Award went to Everyone’s Garden by Momos Coffee, acknowledged for its value as a private garden.

Meanwhile, the award ceremony for the 13th Busan Beautiful Landscape Awards will take place at 5 p.m. on December 10 in Small Conference Room 1 on the 12th floor of City Hall. The Busan Metropolitan City Mayor’s Award will be presented to the project owners, designers, and constructors of the winning sites. A commemorative plaque will also be installed at each project location to further elevate the prestige of the award.

Ahn Cheol-su, Director General of the Green City Bureau, stated, “Busan will continue to identify and promote outstanding landscaping examples so that all residents can experience the dignity of a beautiful garden city in their everyday surroundings. We will do our utmost to realize a ‘happy garden city of integrity in Busan’ through the creation of high-quality urban landscapes and the expansion of green infrastructure.”
