Expansion of Busan Excellent Food Certification to Livestock-Processed Products: Three New Products from Two Companies Certified This Year

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it has certified three new products from two companies as this year’s Busan Excellent Food selections and will hold a plaque presentation ceremony and communication meeting today (27th).

A total of 18 food items from 11 companies applied for this year’s certification. Through document screening and an on-site evaluation of 74 criteria, seven products from four companies were initially selected. These companies then underwent food sampling inspections, a quality evaluation session, and review committee deliberations. In October, the city finalized the certification of three products from two companies.

The newly certified items are:

• ●“Run (RUN),” a fermented milk product by Shinangchon Foods Co., Ltd.;

• ●“Samihun LA Galbi,” a seasoned meat product by Galbigupan Co., Ltd.; and

• ●“Samihun Galbitang,” a meat-extract processed product by the same company.

Notably, this year’s revision of the Ordinance on Certification and Support for Excellent Food of Busan Metropolitan City has removed regulatory barriers that previously made it difficult to certify livestock-processed foods, allowing such products to be recognized for the first time.
The revisions included:

• ●Expanding the definition of “food” to include items produced in livestock-processing facilities; and

• ●Removing the clause restricting certification applications for livestock products only to companies managing integrated brands across production, slaughter, processing, and distribution, thereby lowering entry barriers.

As a result, the scope of Busan Excellent Food, which had previously centered on seafood-processed items, has now expanded to include livestock-processed products, enhancing diversity and industry growth potential.

On November 27, the city will visit the companies newly certified as Busan Excellent Food to conduct a plaque presentation ceremony and a communication meeting.
During the visit, the city will present the official Busan Excellent Food certification plaque and discuss practical cooperation measures, including:

• ●Addressing management difficulties,

• ●Joint promotional and marketing strategies,

• ●Collaboration on new product development, and

• ●Support plans for global market expansion.

Busan’s Excellent Food Certification Program has been implemented since 2018 to expand market access for high-quality local food products and strengthen brand competitiveness. Including this year’s newly certified items, a total of 50 products from 21 companies have been certified as Busan Excellent Food.

The city maintains the reliability of the certification program through strict quality management, including annual post-management evaluations, food sampling inspections, and biennial recertification reviews.
Busan Metropolitan City also provides wide-ranging support for certified companies, including participation in domestic exhibitions, priority supply to group catering facilities, joint brand promotion, and public outreach through various channels, thereby actively supporting corporate growth.

Cho Gyuyul, Director-General of the Citizens’ Health Bureau, stated, “With the recent ordinance revision broadening access to Busan Excellent Food certification, new opportunities are emerging across the local food industry.” He added, “Busan Metropolitan City will continue to serve as a strong partner to help newly certified companies advance Busan’s culinary and food industries toward global competitiveness.”
