Busan Metropolitan City Achieves Full Certification for All Seven Public Museums under the National Public Museum Evaluation Program; Three Museums Earn Fourth Consecutive Accreditation

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that all seven public museums in Busan subject to this year’s Public Museum Evaluation and Certification Program have been selected as “2025 Certified Public Museums.”

The Public Museum Evaluation and Certification Program, introduced by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism under the Museum and Art Gallery Promotion Act, aims to reinforce operational soundness and enhance public service quality in public museums.

Evaluations have been conducted every three years since 2017*, and the 2025 assessment reviewed overall performance from 2022 to 2024, including organization, personnel, facilities, collection management, and programs. Certified museums receive an official certificate and are granted the authority to publicly indicate their accreditation status for the next three years.

*Evaluation years: 2017, 2019, 2022, 2025 (4 cycles total) / National certification rate: 64.7% (2017), 69.2% (2019), 52.1% (2022)

The city achieved full certification for all eligible institutions for the second time since 2019. Notably, Busan Metropolitan City Museum, Bokcheon Museum, and Busan Marine Natural History Museum have achieved the distinction of being certified for four consecutive cycles since the program’s inception.

This year’s evaluation covered seven institutions in Busan: Busan Metropolitan City Museum, Busan Marine Natural History Museum, Bokcheon Museum, Sasang Museum of Everyday Life, Jeonggwan Museum, Provisional Capital Memorial Hall, and Busan Museum of Movies. Among them, Busan Metropolitan City Museum, Busan Marine Natural History Museum, and Bokcheon Museum have been certified in all four cycles since 2017.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “As we prepare to host the 2026 World Heritage Committee (WHC) — the first ever held in Korea — it is highly meaningful that all public museums in Busan subject to evaluation have achieved certification, particularly in light of national certification trends.” He added, “Busan will continue its utmost efforts to ensure that our valuable heritage is well preserved and recognized on the global stage.”
