Busan Metropolitan City Library Hosts the “2025 Busan Public Library Forum” to Mark Its 5th Anniversary

Busan Metropolitan Library announced that it will host the “2025 Busan Public Library Forum” on November 21 at 2 p.m. at the Modeullak Theater located on Basement Level 1 of the library to mark the fifth anniversary of its opening.

This forum is organized by the Busan Chapter of the Public Library Council and hosted by Busan Metropolitan Library. It aims to explore the future direction of public libraries amid the rapidly changing information environment and to strengthen exchange and cooperation among libraries.

The forum, held under the theme “Evolving Knowledge Ecosystems and New Roles of Public Libraries,” will discuss future strategies for public libraries to grow together with citizens amid societal changes such as the rise of artificial intelligence and demographic shifts.

The session will be chaired by Professor Jang Deok-hyeon of the Department of Library and Information Science at Pusan National University, followed by keynote presentations by ▲Professor Bae Gyeong-jae of Dongduk Women’s University ▲Kim Hee-guk, reporter at the International News ▲Oh Ji-eun, Director of Seoul Metropolitan Library. A Q&A session and open discussion will follow with the participation of all attendees.

In the first keynote presentation, Professor Bae Gyeong-jae of Dongduk Women’s University will discuss “Changes in the Role of Future Libraries in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI),” presenting the impact of advances in AI technologies on library services and strategic responses for libraries.

The second presentation will be delivered by Kim Hee-guk, reporter at the International News, on the theme “New Roles of Public Libraries in the Era of Population Decline,” addressing the social responsibilities of public libraries and sustainable operational strategies in the context of regional population decline.

The third presentation, by Oh Ji-eun, Director of Seoul Metropolitan Library, titled “Libraries Aligned with Change and Innovation,” will share various initiatives and achievements that bring library services closer into citizens’ daily lives.

Meanwhile, the forum also celebrates the fifth anniversary of Busan Metropolitan Library’s opening and will highlight achievements such as inter-library cooperation initiatives and citizen-participatory programs that the library has pursued over the years. Any resident of Busan interested in libraries is welcome to attend.
