Busan Metropolitan City Participates in Spain’s “SCEWC 2025,” Showcasing ‘Busan-Style Smart Technologies’

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it participated in the “2025 Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC)” held in Barcelona, Spain from November 4 to 6 (local time), where it actively promoted the “2026 World Smart City Expo (WSCE)” to be hosted in Busan next year and presented innovative technologies developed by local companies, successfully showcasing Busan’s smart city capabilities on the global stage.

The “Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC)” is the world’s largest smart city exhibition, held annually in Barcelona. It serves as a global platform where government agencies, cities, and global corporations share technologies and policies for the design of future cities and establish cooperative networks.

The exhibition features displays of cutting-edge smart technologies and services, business programs for procurement and export consultations, and international conferences involving academia, industry, research, and government sectors — providing a venue for sharing global trends and strategies in smart city development.

Busan Metropolitan City participated as part of the “Korea Pavilion” organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, introducing the “2025 World Smart City Expo (WSCE)” — which was hosted for the first time by a local government at BEXCO in July — and focusing on promoting the upcoming “2026 World Smart City Expo (WSCE)” to be held in Busan next year.

Local companies including Loen Korea Co., SB Security Co., AquaCell Co., and Growth Co. joined the Korea Pavilion to exhibit their smart mobility, safety, and ESG management technologies. They drew attention from global buyers and government institutions, resulting in B2G consultation achievements worth over USD 4 million.

In particular, Loen Korea’s GPS-based on-device traffic accident analysis technology “iGil” was discussed with Turkey’s federal government, Irish partners PTT and Westier, Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City Transportation Bureau, and Italy’s public transport operator Tper for potential collaboration. Further discussions are planned in connection with the product launch scheduled for January next year.

Meanwhile, at the forum titled “Smart City Pilot City Busan and Smart Innovation Technologies,” organized by Busan Metropolitan City, presentations were given on the topic of Busan as a pilot smart city, along with introductions to Busan’s smart mobility and safety projects and regional innovation initiatives under the Busan-type RISE (Regional Innovation System Enhancement) Project.

Notably, the Busan RISE Project consortium (Dong-A University, Korea Maritime & Ocean University, Dongseo University, and Dong-Eui University) reached an agreement with the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany to jointly promote public projects.

The “World Smart City Expo (WSCE)” is the largest smart city exhibition in Asia, jointly organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Science and ICT since 2017 to share smart city technologies and innovations from around the world.

Busan was selected on December 30, 2024, as the host city for the 2025 event and successfully held the “2025 World Smart City Expo” from July 15 to 17 this year. The event featured participation from 277 organizations across 54 countries and attracted 42,958 visitors.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the World Smart City Expo next year, Busan is planning a variety of programs that embody the city’s unique identity and character. In cooperation with BEXCO, the city is promoting the event to major global cities and companies such as Barcelona, Yokohama, and Tallinn to enhance the international standing of the 2026 World Smart City Expo (WSCE).

Jung Na-young, Director General of the Busan Future Technology Strategy Bureau, stated,
“This participation in the Smart City Expo World Congress is expected to serve as a stepping stone for strengthening the global competitiveness of local smart city companies and developing new export markets,” adding,
“We hope this event will further raise interest and participation in the World Smart City Expo to be held in Busan next year.”
