Busan Presents a New Housing Solution for Hillside Redevelopment

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold the “Busan-Style Hillside Housing Innovation Model Briefing Session: Building Housing Solutions for the City’s Slopes” today (Nov. 10) at 2:00 p.m. in the International Conference Hall at City Hall in collaboration with world-renowned architectural firm OMA.

This briefing session is part of the “Busan-Style Housing Model Development Pilot Project for Hillside Redevelopment Areas” and aims to propose new housing solutions that reflect Busan’s unique topographical characteristics.

The pilot project is jointly carried out by:
▲ the Busan International Architecture Festival Organizing Committee (Executive Director: Lee Seong-ho), which serves as a co-executing organization, and
▲ OMA, a global architectural group that participated in the design research.

OMA, a leading architecture firm based in the Netherlands, is recognized for its integrated approach to city and architecture and has led innovative residential and cultural projects in major cities around the world.

During the briefing session, OMA’s representative, Chris van Duijn, will directly present the “Busan-Style Hillside Housing Model Design.”

Focusing on redevelopment target areas such as the (tentative) Yeongju 2 District and (tentative) Anchang Village District, the presentation will propose a design concept combining diverse housing types—terraced, villa, row, and tower residences—to create a multidimensional housing model. This approach seeks to make sustainable and community-centered use of Busan’s distinctive topography.

Approximately 150 experts, including local architects, urban planners, and public officials, will attend the event. A Q&A session will follow OMA’s presentation.

Simultaneous interpretation will be provided to facilitate active exchanges between domestic and international professionals. Through these discussions, the City aims to explore practical ways to reflect the proposed hillside housing model in both policy and practice.

Through this briefing session, Busan Metropolitan City seeks to present a vision of a “Busan-Style Housing Model that Transforms the Constraints of Hillside Urban Environments into Opportunities for Innovation,” working with architectural and urban experts to establish new directions for future urban redevelopment and housing policy.
