The 20th Busan Fisheries Policy Forum Held Exploring Innovation Strategies for Busan’s Fisheries Industry in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold the 20th Busan Fisheries Policy Forum today (November 5) at 2:30 p.m. at Exhibition Hall 1 of BEXCO.

This event is hosted by the Busan Fisheries Policy Forum and sponsored by Busan Metropolitan City, among others.

The forum, held under the theme “Innovation Strategies for Busan’s Fisheries Industry in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI)”, is designed to bring together experts in related fields to share the latest trends and discuss future policy directions.

The event will feature expert presentations and a comprehensive panel discussion, attended by approximately 100 participants, including officials from fisheries-related organizations and associations, fishermen, and industry professionals.

The presentations will begin with:

• ●Professor Kim Do-hoon of Pukyong National University, presenting “Building Governance for Digital Innovation Policies in Busan’s Fisheries Industry”, followed by

• ●Researcher Yoon Seok-jin of the National Institute of Fisheries Science, with “AI and Big Data-Based Fisheries Resource Management and Smart Fishing Innovation”, and

• ●CEO Jung Young-in of Sea Life Science Lab Co., Ltd., who will discuss “Building Smart Logistics and Processing Systems in Busan and Strategies for Expanding Seafood Exports.”

The panel discussion will be chaired by Professor Kim Young-mok, Dean of the College of Fisheries Science at Pukyong National University. Panelists will include:

• ●Park Young-ho, Director of the Fisheries Resource Policy Division at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries

• ●Kang Hyun-joo, Director of the Fisheries Policy Division at Busan Metropolitan City

• ●Lee Jong-hwa, President of the Fisheries Economics Research Institute at the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives

• ●Yoo Seung-yeop, Director of the Maritime and Fisheries Industry Division at Busan Technopark

• ●Nam Soo-min, Director of the Digital Strategy Office at the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency

• ●Park Ki-jae, Director-General of the Food Convergence Research Division at the Korea Food Research Institute

Alongside the forum, a side event titled “Busan Premium Seafood Promotion Event” will also take place.

This promotional event will run from November 5 to November 7 for three days, in conjunction with the 2025 Busan International Seafood Expo, and will be held at Booth C20 in Exhibition Hall 1 at BEXCO. The event aims to showcase the excellence and competitiveness of Busan’s seafood products to a wider audience.

Recently, digital transformation in the fisheries sector has been accelerating through the adoption of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and big data.

AI-based fisheries resource forecasting, automated aquaculture systems, and smart logistics and processing technologies are contributing not only to improved productivity and quality but also to sustainable resource management and enhanced export competitiveness.

As a leading maritime and fisheries city, Busan holds a strategic position to spearhead this digital transition. The upcoming forum is expected to serve as an important platform for shaping the future direction of the region’s fisheries industry.
