Busan Metropolitan City Completes 30 Sites Under the 2025 “White Roof Installation Support Project”

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it has continued the “White Roof Installation Support Project,” one of its initiatives to achieve “2050 Carbon Neutrality,” and has completed installation at 30 sites so far this year (2025). The City plans to complete one additional site next month, concluding this year’s project.

The “White Roof Installation Support Project” applies bright (white-toned) coating materials with sunlight-reflective properties to the rooftops of houses for vulnerable households and community-use facilities. The coating helps reduce indoor temperatures by 4–5 degrees Celsius, contributing to energy savings, greenhouse gas reduction, and mitigation of urban heat island effects.

Since its launch in 2019, the project has been implemented annually and has completed installations at a total of 173 sites as of this year, establishing itself as a tangible carbon-neutrality model felt directly by citizens.

This year’s project was successfully carried out through a public-private collaboration system involving:

• ●the Busan Architects Association (talent donation),

• ●Busan Bank (installation cost support),

• ●Noroo Paint (material donation),

• ●the Korean Red Cross (administrative support), and

• ●the Korea Productivity Center Certification (verification work).

The City plans to expand the scale of the project next year to further promote the creation of green buildings. The 2026 project will begin accepting applications through each district and county’s architecture division at the end of this year. Busan will encourage voluntary citizen participation and private-sector engagement to further broaden the foundation for carbon-neutral practices.
