Busan Metropolitan City announced that Classic Busan, led by Director Park Min-jeong, will host a concert opera performance of Carmen at Busan Concert Hall from December 19 to 20, conducted by Artistic Director Chung Myung-whun.

This performance draws special attention as Maestro Chung—one of the most acclaimed conductors of our time—returns to the Korean stage with Carmen for the first time in about 20 years.

Bizet’s Carmen is a masterpiece long loved for its passionate arias filled with exotic melodies and its romantic orchestral compositions intricately crafted by the French composer.

Composer Georges Bizet captured the dramatic story—filled with conflict and passion among characters from different social classes such as Carmen, Don José, and Micaëla—with delicate and realistic music. The chance to hear this work performed by Maestro Chung and the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra is indeed rare.

Tenor Lee Yong-hoon will perform as Don José and mezzo-soprano Michèle Losier will appear as Carmen, joined by other distinguished international artists active in major opera houses around the world.

Lee Yong-hoon, who currently performs at leading opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna State Opera, is recognized as one of the world’s top tenors. Although his performances in Korea have been limited to only two appearances so far, this concert marks his third time on a domestic stage. His rendition of Don José’s aria “The Flower That You Threw to Me” will showcase his deep emotion and powerful expressiveness.

Canadian mezzo-soprano Michèle Losier, known for her rich tone, will give a captivating performance as Carmen. Baritone Kim Ki-hoon, winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, will take on the role of Escamillo, heightening expectations for the show.

In addition, ten supporting cast members will enhance the stage with brilliant costumes and engaging performances. The Gimhae City Choir, Classic Busan Choir, and Haeundae District Boys and Girls Choir will also participate, adding grandeur and depth to the production.
