Busan Metropolitan City Hosts the 18th Construction Technology Research Best Practice Presentation

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it jointly hosted the 18th Construction Technology Research Best Practice Presentation (hereinafter “the Presentation”) with the Korea Construction Management Association on October 24 at the City Hall International Conference Hall.

The event was organized to share the construction technology research achievements of major construction companies, enhance the competitiveness of Busan’s construction industry, and establish a foundation for mutual growth with local firms. Marking its 18th year, the event served as a platform for presenting R&D outcomes.

Over 200 participants attended the presentation, including representatives from major domestic construction companies, the city government, district and county offices, public corporations, educational offices, local associations, and academia.

Notably, this year’s presentation was the first to be held outside the Seoul metropolitan area. Ten leading domestic construction companies showcased 18 outstanding research cases across four sectors: civil engineering, architecture, convergence, and safety & environment.

Local participants included the Busan branches of the Korea Construction Association, Korea Specialty Contractors Association, and Korea Mechanical Equipment Construction Association, as well as universities such as Pusan National University and Pukyong National University. Together, they discussed future cooperation plans for introducing smart technologies in response to structural changes in the construction environment and for establishing systems for safety and environmental management.

In the civil engineering sector, GS Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. presented its project titled “Development of a 3D Design Automation Program for Drainage Facilities in Apartment Complexes.”
The project developed algorithms and programs that automatically extract design information from 2D drawings and generate 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) models using digital techniques. It was recognized as a model example that aligns with the government’s current smart technology policy.

In the architecture sector, Kolon Global Corporation presented a case study titled “Development of ‘Smart Checker,’ a BIM-Based Automatic Review Platform to Prevent Rebar Misconstruction and Omission.”
This case was highly regarded for its creativity, as it introduced the nation’s first automatic review system for rebar shop drawings, demonstrating a clear distinction from existing technologies.

In addition, in the convergence sector, Samsung C&T Corporation presented “Development and Application of Robots to Eliminate Safety Risks in High-Altitude Operations,” which was commended for its innovativeness and creativity.
In the safety & environment sector, Daewoo E&C Co., Ltd. presented “Development of Eco-Friendly Column Seismic Reinforcement Technology (ESR Method) Using Lightweight Steel Rapid Connection,” which earned positive evaluations for its cost efficiency and field applicability.

Lim Kyung-mo, Director General of the Bureau of Urban Innovation and Balanced Development, stated,
“We expect that through this presentation, local construction companies will gain insights from the R&D outcomes of leading firms and secure future competitiveness. We also hope it will lead to greater participation of local companies as registered partners of major construction firms and to an expansion of their project opportunities.”

He added, “Busan Metropolitan City will continue to support the development of a technology-oriented construction industry and a fair market environment, striving to create a construction ecosystem in Busan where large corporations and local companies grow together.”
