Busan Metropolitan City Discusses Strategic Cooperation Plans with Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollanam-do at the “Namhaean Future Vision Forum”

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will discuss strategic cooperation measures for mutual growth with Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollanam-do at the “Namhaean Future Vision Forum,” which will take place today (October 20) at 2 p.m. in the BEXCO Convention Hall.

This year’s forum, held in Busan following the 2023 event in Gyeongnam and the 2024 event in Jeonnam, is designed for Mayor Park Heong-joon of Busan, Governor Park Wan-su of Gyeongsangnam-do, and Governor Kim Yeong-rok of Jeollanam-do to gather and deliberate on the concrete future of joint development across the Namhaean region.

Approximately 300 participants are expected to attend, including the governors of Busan, Gyeongnam, and Jeonnam, as well as local and regional assembly members, municipal mayors, public officials, business representatives, and academic figures.

Now in its third year since its inaugural session in 2023, the forum has evolved into a platform for wide-area cooperation and communication among the three coastal regions—Busan, Gyeongnam, and Jeonnam—sharing urban competitiveness strategies and visions for the Namhaean area.

Notably, the policy talk show featuring the three provincial governors has been extended from 30 minutes to 60 minutes this year, allowing ample time for the participants to engage in in-depth discussions on future visions and strategies for mutual growth.

This year’s forum will focus on how innovation industries, talent, culture, and tourism can circulate evenly within the maritime Namhaean region to achieve balanced innovative development, as well as on identifying breakthrough strategies for new growth in the area.

The forum will be divided into two sessions.
In Session 1, the three provincial governors will participate in a live-broadcast policy talk show under the theme “The Era of Maritime Decentralization: Discussing the Development of the Namhaean Region,” moderated by Professor Lee Kyung-chan of Youngsan University.
Mayor Park plans to discuss strategies for collaborative development of the Namhaean region, highlighting Busan’s leadership in marine industries, marine science and technology, and fisheries innovation as the city grows into a global maritime hub.

Session 2 will be moderated by Hong Jang-won, Research Fellow at the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), and streamed via YouTube. It will feature presentations and a panel discussion on joint growth strategies for the Namhaean region.
▲ Jang Ha-yong, Director at the Busan Institute, will present on “Strategies for Establishing the Busan–Gyeongnam–Jeonnam Arctic Economic Corridor in Preparation for the Era of the Northern Sea Route.”
▲ Park Byeong-joo, Director General at the Gyeongnam Research Institute, will discuss “Revitalizing the Namhaean Regional Economy through the Expansion of Port-Based Logistics Businesses.”
▲ Choi Woo-ram, Senior Research Fellow at the Jeonnam Research Institute, will present on “Creating a Southern Region Wide-Area Economic Community.”
Following the presentations, the participants will hold a comprehensive discussion on practical approaches to promote joint growth in the Namhaean region.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “If the three provinces—Busan, Gyeongnam, and Jeonnam—linking the southern coast—work together strategically by leveraging their respective strengths, it will not only realize maritime decentralization but also serve as a turning point for the Namhaean region to rise as a new axis of growth in Korea.”
He added, “Busan will lead the era of maritime decentralization based on its accumulated policy capabilities and actively cooperate with Gyeongnam and Jeonnam to build a strategic community.”
