Busan Metropolitan City to Host the 7th Busan Urban Agriculture Festival “Urban Agriculture Together, Happy Urban Farmers!”

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will host the 7th Busan Urban Agriculture Festival from October 24 to 25 at Cheolma Urban Agriculture Park in Gijang-gun.

The event, themed “Urban Agriculture Together, Happy Urban Farmers!”, is jointly organized by Busan Metropolitan City and Gijang-gun and hosted by the Busan Urban Agriculture Association.

The festival will be a celebration where urban farmers and citizens can enjoy various programs under the theme of urban agriculture. Over 40 organizations, including Busan’s urban agriculture groups, the Pukyong Horticultural Agricultural Cooperative, the Busan Regional Headquarters of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (NongHyup), and related universities, will participate to offer a rich array of attractions.

In addition, the Gijang-gun Autumn Chrysanthemum Festival will take place concurrently, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the beauty of autumn.

The event will consist of five main sections: an opening ceremony, experience booths, memory zone, sharing marketplace, and educational exhibition zone.

The opening ceremony will feature a pre-event performance and award ceremonies for the “2025 Citizen Urban Garden King” and “Outstanding Urban Agriculture Experience Essay.”

The experience booths will offer a variety of hands-on activities organized by urban agriculture communities, where citizens can make air-purifying plant pots, floral crowns, moss balls, and grip-toks decorated with pressed flowers.

The memory zone will recreate a nostalgic rural atmosphere, featuring activities such as rice threshing and milling experiences, an autumn chrysanthemum exhibition, and booths where visitors can enjoy traditional snacks.

At the sharing marketplace, there will be free distributions of flowers, effective microorganism (EM) solutions, and native seeds, along with sales of agricultural specialties from municipalities in rural–urban exchange partnerships.

The educational exhibition zone will include a flower tea tasting event, a Q&A corner about urban agriculture, and a photo and essay exhibition showcasing the experiences of Busan’s urban farmers, creating an engaging space for learning and sharing.

Meanwhile, since enacting the Ordinance on the Promotion and Support of Urban Agriculture in 2012, Busan Metropolitan City has developed 3.83 million square meters of urban gardens and fostered 285,000 urban farming households as of January this year.

Furthermore, the city has implemented various initiatives such as the “Home-front Box Garden Project,” “Repotting Companion Plants,” “Elderly Community Garden Creation,” and “Children’s Urban Garden School” to meet citizens’ growing interest and enthusiasm for urban agriculture.

Park Geun-rok, Director General of the Maritime, Agriculture, and Fisheries Bureau, stated,
“Urban agriculture offers solutions to various urban challenges, such as environmental issues caused by urbanization and industrialization, and the fading sense of community. Busan Metropolitan City will continue to promote urban agriculture by holding the annual festival to raise awareness, provide citizens with enjoyable experiences, and spread happiness through urban farming.”
