Busan Museum to Host the 25th Museum Academy: “Britain – 500 Years of Literature and Art”

The Busan Museum (hereinafter referred to as “the Museum”) announced that it will host the 25th Museum Academy titled “Britain – 500 Years of Literature and Art” (hereinafter referred to as “the lecture series”) every Friday at 1:30 p.m. from October 24 to November 14 in the museum’s main auditorium.

Since its launch in 1999, the “Museum Academy” has been the Museum’s representative liberal education program for citizens for 25 years. It invites distinguished experts in the fields of history and culture to deliver in-depth lectures.

The lecture series will take place over four weeks from October 24 to November 14, featuring two lectures each Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:50 p.m., for a total of eight lectures, open to 200 Busan citizens.

In addition, participants who attend at least two weeks (four lectures) will receive a 30% discount ticket for the Special Exchange Exhibition, “Secrets of the Masters: 500 Years of Literature and Art from Shakespeare.”

Linked to the Special Exchange Exhibition “Secrets of the Masters: 500 Years of Literature and Art from Shakespeare,” this lecture series will explore the flow of British literature and art from the Renaissance to the modern era in depth.

On October 24, Professor Lee Taek-kwang of Kyung Hee University will give a lecture on “The Age of Photography and the Fate of the New Portrait,” followed by Professor Son Soo-yeon of Hongik University presenting “The Flow of British Portraiture and the Portraits of Novelists.”

On October 31, Professor Lee Jong-woo of Hongik University will discuss “Renaissance English Literature: Renaissance Humanism and the Birth of the Self (‘I’),” and Professor Lee Mi-kyung of Yonsei University will give a talk titled “The Art of Record and Memory: Portraits of Writers.”

On November 7, Professor Jeong Eun-gwi of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies will present “In Search of Love: Language that Changes the Mind and Poetry that Changes the World,” followed by Professor Woo Jung-min of Duksung Women’s University with “Art, Obscenity, and Freedom.”

On November 14, Professor Park Pyung-jong of Chung-Ang University will speak on “A Brief History of Portrait Photography,” and Professor Jeon Ja-young of Korea National University of Transportation will close the series with “The Usefulness of British Literary Writers and Films Around the 21st Century.”

Applications can be submitted from 10:00 a.m. on October 14 to 4:00 p.m. on October 22 through the Busan Museum website, on a first-come, first-served basis. On-site registration will also be available on the day of each lecture if seats remain. Participation is free of charge.
