Busan Metropolitan City to Hold the 46th Busan Citizens’ Day Commemoration Ceremony

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold the “46th Busan Citizens’ Day Commemoration Ceremony” today (October 2) at 10:00 a.m. in the City Hall Grand Auditorium.

The ceremony will be attended by Mayor Park Heong-joon, key institutional leaders, civic groups, members of the Busan Great Victory Memorial Association, and about 700 citizens, who will celebrate the 433rd anniversary of the Busanpo Naval Battle victory and reaffirm Busan’s determination to leap forward as a “Global Hub City.”

The program will proceed in the following order: the national pledge, screening of a commemorative video, reading of the Busan Citizens’ Charter, the Proud Citizen Awards presentation, a commemorative address by Mayor Park Heong-joon, congratulatory remarks by the Deputy Speaker of the City Council and other guests, a celebratory performance, and the singing of the Busan Hymn.

Prior to the ceremony, at 9:00 a.m., Mayor Park Heong-joon, the Deputy Speaker of the City Council, and about 30 others will visit the Chungnyeol Shrine to pay tribute to the patriotic martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

This year marks the 41st presentation of the Proud Citizen Awards, an esteemed recognition granted to Busan citizens who have made significant contributions to the development of the community and the happiness of its people. A total of seven awardees have been selected to receive the honor on this day.

As part of the commemorative performance, the Busan Metropolitan Chorus will present “Nostalgia,” “Busan Medley,” and “Drinking Song,” honoring the noble spirit of sacrifice of the nation’s forebears and singing of Busan’s new leap forward and hopeful future.

In his commemorative address, Mayor Park Heong-joon will express, “On the occasion of the 46th Busan Citizens’ Day, I extend my deep gratitude and congratulations to the recipients of the Proud Citizen Awards who have brought honor to Busan. Believing in the strength and potential of our city, I will work together with our citizens to build a ‘Global Hub City’ and a ‘city one would choose to live in again.’”

Meanwhile, Busan Metropolitan City designated October 5 as “Busan Citizens’ Day” in 1980. The date corresponds to the solar calendar conversion of September 1, 1592, when Admiral Yi Sun-sin led a decisive victory in the Busanpo Naval Battle (the Busan Great Victory). This day is commemorated annually to honor the noble spirit of resistance demonstrated by our forebears.
