Busan Metropolitan City Holds Special Torch Lighting Ceremony at Yeondaebong, Gadeokdo… Lighting the “Flame of Flight” Towards the World

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that at 6 p.m. today (October 2), it will hold the “Flame of Flight” lighting and welcoming ceremony under the theme of “Busan, a Global Hub City Soaring Toward the World and the Future.”

This event begins with the torch-lighting ceremony of the Seven Fairies at Yeondaebong, Gadeokdo, followed by an aerial relay via paragliding, a maritime relay by the Busan Coast Guard vessels, and various programs at Busan Station including citizen performances and a popular music concert.

The torch lighting commences with a solemn traditional ritual in which the Seven Fairies receive the divine will of the heavens and light the flame.

Subsequently, No Chung-heon, President of the Busan Paragliding Association, will carry the flame through the skies from Yeondaebong, Gadeokdo to Daehang Port by paragliding.

Thereafter, Busan Coast Guard vessels will continue the maritime relay along the victory route of Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s Battle of Busan, symbolically connecting the sky and sea of Busan.

The “Flame of Flight,” carried along the victory route of Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s Battle of Busan, will arrive at Busan Station, the gateway to the Eurasian Continental Railway, where it will be kept at City Hall until October 13.

At Busan Station, the enthusiasm of citizens will be expressed through the “Hwago (Burning Drum)” performance, followed by a citizen cheering concert featuring well-known singers.

Performers at the concert include: ▲ Busan’s popular band “Jiwoon Band” ▲ Female duo “Kyungseo Yeji” ▲ Rock duo “Norazo” ▲ Mixed group “Koyote.”

Along with the screening of a pre-recorded video of the torch lighting at Yeondaebong, Gadeokdo, Busan Coast Guard Chief Seo Jeong-won will appear on stage to enshrine the flame, creating a touching moment.

In addition, on October 3, the official torch lighting ceremony for the 106th National Sports Festival, symbolizing the long-standing history and tradition of the games, will be held at Manisan Chamseongdan in Ganghwa-gun, Incheon.

Busan Metropolitan City will form a torch delegation, led by Son Tae-wook, Director General of Sports Bureau, and Shin Hyun-gi, Secretary-General of the Busan Sports Council, to carry the “Flame of Harmony” from Manisan to Busan City Hall.

Vice Mayor for Administrative Affairs Lee Jun-seung stated, “Today’s torch lighting and relay mark a powerful new beginning as Busan advances toward the world and the future. We hope this special torch lighting will convey passion and inspiration to citizens and shine a bright light on Busan’s future.”
