Busan Expands Entire Section of Chungmu-daero after 23 Years – Expected to Become a Key Artery of West Busan’s Transportation Network

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that at 10:30 a.m. today (29th), it will hold a completion ceremony for the “Cooperative Fish Market Access Road (Chungmu-daero) Expansion Project” in the Chungmu-daero area of Seo-gu. With this, the city concludes the long-delayed urban planning project of expanding Chungmu-daero in Seo-gu, which had remained unexecuted for 23 years.

The ceremony will be attended by Mayor Park Heong-joon, National Assembly members, the Chair of the Busan Metropolitan Council, the Mayor of Seo-gu, and approximately 300 local residents.

The “Cooperative Fish Market Access Road (Chungmu-daero) Expansion Project” widened a 740-meter section of road between the Busan Cooperative Fish Market and Daelim Beach Town. The total project cost was 79.2 billion KRW, fully funded by the city.

After the project was designated in April 2019 as a land reserve project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, Busan signed a project agreement with Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) and obtained approval. Following land cost adjustments and related procedures, construction began in September 2021 and was completed on September 24, 2025.

With this project completed, Busan Metropolitan City has expanded the entire 2.3-kilometer section of Chungmu-daero, from Chungmu Intersection to Namhang-dong and Daelim Beach Town, from two lanes to four lanes.

The expansion is expected to resolve chronic congestion between Chungmu Intersection, Namhang-dong, and Daelim Beach Town, while strengthening the function of Chungmu-daero as a major arterial road in west Busan, thus laying the foundation for balanced regional development.

Thanks to the expanded road, the bottleneck section near the Cooperative Fish Market access road will be eased, greatly improving traffic flow.

In particular, with the expansion of urban infrastructure linked to Namhang Bridge and Cheonma Tunnel, the project is expected to create synergistic effects with the ongoing modernization of the Cooperative Fish Market, establishing Chungmu-daero as the central axis of west Busan’s transportation network.

The expanded Chungmu-daero will also serve as a core logistics and transportation artery connecting Busan Port’s Namhang Bridge and Busan New Port, significantly reducing travel time to major hubs in west Busan.

The Cooperative Fish Market Access Road (Chungmu-daero) will officially open to traffic from 00:00 on October 1 following today’s completion ceremony (29th).

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “This project, which began in 2003 and has dragged on for over 20 years, has finally been completed. Going forward, Busan Metropolitan City will spare no effort to provide necessary support in transportation, distribution, culture, and environment, so that more citizens can feel satisfied living in Busan.”
