Busan Metropolitan City Rekindles Innovation with Future Technologies! The 11th Busan Research and Development (R&D) Week to Be Held

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will host the 11th Busan Research and Development (R&D) Week at BEXCO Exhibition Center II from September 25 to 26.

The event is organized by the City and hosted by the Busan Institute of Science and Technology Promotion (BISTEP). Since its launch in 2015, the “Busan R&D Week” has served as a forum for communication among industry, academia, research, and government to discuss the present and future of Busan’s science and technology. Now in its 11th year, this year’s event offers a wider variety of topics and programs than last year.

Themed “Rekindling Busan with Future Innovation Technologies,” this year’s event will feature keynote lectures, invited lectures, academic colloquia, mini-symposia, and presentations of outstanding R&D achievements.

• ●The keynote lecture will be delivered by Yeom Han-woong, former Vice Chair of the National Science and Technology Advisory Council and professor at POSTECH, under the theme “Science and Technology Policy in the Era of Innovation and Transition.”

• ●The invited lecture will be presented by Ahn Hyun-sil, Vice President for Research at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), on the topic “The Final Industrial War in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI): What Is the Regional Science and Technology Strategy?”

• ●The Association of Busan Scientists and Engineers Abroad will conduct discussions and provide advice on Busan’s policy agenda under the theme “The Bioindustry and Regional Innovation.”

The opening ceremony will be held at 2:00 p.m. on September 25 in the first-floor conference room of Exhibition Center II at BEXCO. The ceremony will include the “2025 Busan Outstanding R&D Achievement Awards” along with awards in three categories.

The event will be attended by more than 150 participants, including Lee Jun-seung, Vice Mayor for Administrative Affairs; Choi Jae-weon, President of Pusan National University; Lee Soo-tae, Chair of the CTO Council of the Busan Science and Technology Association; as well as presidents of local universities and heads of related organizations.

The awards will be presented in three categories: Outstanding R&D Achievements of Busan, the Busan Science and Technology Innovation Award, and contributions to creating a science and technology-oriented city.

On the second day, September 26, detailed programs will follow, including the “Future Technology Innovation Forum for AI-Driven Manufacturing Innovation” and the “Policy Colloquium on the Promotion of Busan’s AI Industry.”

• ●These programs will cover topics such as the AI-driven Manufacturing Innovation Forum, the AI Policy Colloquium for fostering Busan’s AI industry, a mini-symposium sharing trends in AI-based multimodal biohealth technology, and the RISE-Glocal Innovation Forum focusing on advancing university-industry collaboration within the RISE framework.

• ●In addition, a policy forum on intelligent robotics will also take place, featuring participants such as Professor Lee Seung-jun of Pusan National University, who led his team to first place in the Home Service category at “RoboCup 2025.”

We expect this event to go beyond academic exchange and become a platform to discuss directions for urban development based on science and technology, thereby enabling Busan Metropolitan City to grow into an innovation city rooted in science and technology.”
