Busan Metropolitan City to Host the “1st Animal Protection Day Festival,” Taking a Leap Forward as a Leading City for Animal Welfare

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon), together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, announced that it will host the “1st Animal Protection Day Festival” at BEXCO Exhibition Center II for two days from September 26 to 27.

The “1st Animal Protection Day Festival” marks the first official event commemorating the establishment of October 4 as “Animal Protection Day,” and will be held under the theme “From Animal Protection to Animal Welfare.”

The festival will feature an opening ceremony, expert lectures, and promotional and experience booths.

The opening ceremony, scheduled for September 26 at 2 p.m., will include the proclamation of the Animal Welfare Charter, the appointment of Busan Metropolitan City’s Animal Welfare Ambassador (veterinarian Seol Chae-hyeon), and the presentation of awards to individuals recognized for contributions to animal welfare.

Special programs include “Companion Animal Behavior Correction Clinic” by veterinarian Seol Chae-hyeon, a lecture on smartphone pet photography, and a companion dog sports event (“Tired Dogs are Happy Dogs”).

Over 130 exhibition and promotional booths will be operated, featuring programs such as pet industry exhibitions, promotion of animal welfare-certified products, educational and hands-on experiences, and booths operated by animal protection organizations, allowing citizens to directly participate and engage.

Additional side events include a companion animal yacht tour on September 26 and a seaside train experience on September 27.

Through this festival, the City plans to declare its commitment to shifting from “animal protection” to “animal welfare” and to foster a mature culture of pet ownership by creating a festival for communication and harmony between pet owners and non-owners, positioning itself as a leading city for animal welfare.

An Cheol-su, Director General of the Green City Bureau, stated, “The 1st Animal Protection Day Festival is a meaningful occasion to promote the social values of living together with animals,” and added, “We ask for the active interest and participation of citizens so that Busan, in cooperation with the central government, can grow into a city centered on animal welfare.”
