Busan Metropolitan City – MOLIT and Related Organizations Sign Agreement on the Promotion of the Integrated Development of the Busan Railway Underground Project

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that today (22nd) at 4:30 p.m., in the conference room on the 2nd floor of Busan Station, it signed the “Agreement on the Promotion of the Integrated Development of the Busan Railway Underground Project” with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL), Korea National Railway, Korea Land and Housing Corporation, Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, and Korea Transport Institute.

This agreement was arranged to promise the fundamental cooperation necessary among related institutions to ensure the smooth implementation of the integrated development of the railway underground project.

At the signing ceremony, Vice Mayor for Future Innovation Seong Heui-yeob, Vice Minister Kang Hee-eop of MOLIT, and executives from the related institutions, including vice presidents and directors, attended and signed the agreement.

According to the agreement, the institutions will establish a close cooperation system by operating a regular consultative body, providing technical support from specialized organizations, and sharing information.

The city will cooperate with MOLIT to establish a master plan and support expeditious administrative procedures, while MOLIT will provide institutional support to ensure that the integrated railway underground development proceeds in a timely manner. The related public institutions will provide expertise in railway, urban development, and transportation, and all parties will jointly cooperate in the administrative, technical, and external affairs necessary for project implementation.

The leading project for the integrated railway underground development, the “Gyeongbu Line (Busanjin Station–Busan Station Section) Railway Underground Integrated Development Project,” involves constructing a deck over the tracks, relocating the Busanjin Station container yard (CY) and the Busan Station marshalling yard, and developing approximately 370,000 square meters of railway land.

Among the three priority projects selected by MOLIT in February, this project is progressing the fastest and is scheduled to commence the basic plan study in October.

Vice Mayor for Future Innovation Seong Heui-yeob stated, “The railway underground integrated development project is a core initiative for urban space innovation and strengthening Busan’s urban competitiveness. Following the leading project for the Gyeongbu Line (Busanjin Station–Busan Station section), we will also work to include the Gupo–Gaya vehicle depot section, additionally proposed in May, in the comprehensive railway underground plan so that the project can expand step by step.”

He added, “Through this agreement, we will devote all our administrative capacity to ensuring that the Gyeongbu Line (Busanjin Station–Busan Station section) railway underground integrated development project becomes a successful model for railway underground projects in Korea.”
