Groundbreaking Ceremony for Gyeongsang National University Busan Animal Hospital as a Win-Win Cooperation Model between Busan Metropolitan City, Gyeongsang National University, and Tongmyong University

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Gyeongsang National University Busan Animal Hospital would take place today (September 22) at 2:30 p.m. at the planned hospital site located within Tongmyong University grounds in Yongdang-dong, Nam-gu.

The event was attended by Mayor Park Heong-joon, City Council Chairperson An Seong-min, Gyeongsang National University President Kwon Jin-hoe, Chairperson of Tongmyong Cultural Foundation Kang Gyeong-su, Tongmyong University President Lee Sang-cheon, Nam-gu District Mayor Oh Eun-taek, CEO of Kyungdong Construction Kim Jeong-gi, members of the Korean Veterinary Medical Association, and more than 100 participants who came together to mark a new beginning for animal welfare and veterinary research.

The Gyeongsang National University Busan Animal Hospital is being advanced as a Build-Transfer-Lease (BTL) project, in which Gyeongsang National University will construct and operate the building on land contributed by Tongmyong University.

The hospital will be the largest of its kind nationwide, with a site area of 13,300㎡ and a total floor area of 9,213㎡ (Basement 1, 4 above-ground floors), which is 1.6 times larger than the Seoul National University College of Veterinary Medicine Animal Hospital.

• ●The 1st floor will house the Emergency Care Center, Imaging Center, and general treatment facilities.

• ●The 2nd floor will provide internal medicine treatment facilities.

• ●The 3rd floor will contain surgical suites and other surgery-related facilities.

• ●The 4th floor will be dedicated to student education and training.

• ●Basement 1 will feature a Radiation Therapy Center.

In addition, the hospital will serve as a core hub for the development of the companion animal industry by incubating policies and programs related to employment and entrepreneurship in connection with regional university departments of companion animal studies, and by supporting areas such as pet healthcare.

This project was initiated based on a memorandum of understanding signed in March 2022 between Busan Metropolitan City, Gyeongsang National University, and Tongmyong University, and holds great significance as a model case of win-win cooperation between a local government, a national university, and a private university.

Under the agreement signed on March 14, 2022, Tongmyong University provides the land, Gyeongsang National University is responsible for construction and operation of the hospital, and Busan Metropolitan City supports administrative procedures and policy development.

After completing various steps, including feasibility review, securing a national budget allocation for the BTL project, signing of the implementation agreement, selection of the project operator, city management plan approval and announcement, implementation plan authorization, and building permit application, the project has now reached the groundbreaking stage. Full-scale construction will begin, with completion targeted for June 2027.
