Busan Metropolitan City Selects 16,080 Citizen Supporters to Officially Kick Off Preparations for the National Sports Festival (and Para Games)

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it has finalized the selection of 16,080 Citizen Supporters for the successful hosting of the 2025 National Sports Festival and National Para Games, officially launching their activities.

Citizen Supporters have been recruited since April, consisting of 7,093 citizens and 8,987 students.

During the recruitment process, the City carried out a wide range of promotional efforts, including: district-level campaigns, outreach at universities and major local events, QR code distribution through schools and the Office of Education, and both online and offline promotions through social media, posters, and banners. These efforts successfully drew broad public attention and voluntary participation.

In particular, the Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education exceeded its student supporter recruitment target (8,000) through creative student-centered programs, such as the “106-kilometer daily walking challenge” and the “student reporters group” organized to commemorate the 106th National Sports Festival. This achievement is expected to inject youthful energy and fresh ideas into building a more dynamic cheering culture.

The Citizen Supporters launching ceremony will be held today (19th) at 1:00 p.m. at the Sajik Indoor Gymnasium. It will include pre-ceremony performances, the launching declaration, the reading of a resolution, and a cheering festival, creating a festive event for all to enjoy.

The ceremony will be attended by Mayor Park Heong-joon, Busan City Council Chairman Ahn Seong-min, Superintendent of Education Kim Seok-jun, Busan Sports Council Chairman Jang In-hwa, Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Yang Jae-saeng, Secretary General Kim Seon-gil of the Busan Sports Association for the Disabled, as well as major dignitaries and 1,600 Citizen Supporters.

Pre-ceremony performances include a traditional big-drum performance and cheerleading, followed by the entrance of flags from 17 metropolitan cities and provinces, alongside dignitaries and a children’s cheerleading group, heightening the festive atmosphere.

The official program includes the declaration of the launching ceremony, presentation of appointment certificates, and reading of the resolution. This will be followed by a mass card performance wishing for the success of the Games and an official cheering performance by all supporters, showcasing their passion and unity.

After the official program, a cheering festival with professional cheerleaders will be held, transforming the event into a celebratory gathering for all attendees.

Starting with the launching ceremony, Citizen Supporters will engage in full-scale activities throughout the Games, including cheering at stadiums and participating in the opening and closing ceremonies.

The City has produced and distributed a “Supporters Activity Manual” outlining service guidelines, cheering methods, and safety measures, and has provided uniforms (vests) and cheering tools to ensure unified operations.

Through these efforts, the supporters will go beyond simple cheering to serve as “Ambassadors of Cheering,” introducing Busan’s welcoming culture and delivering warm encouragement and inspiration to both athletes and spectators.

Mayor Park Heong-joon emphasized, “Supporters are the driving force delivering strength and inspiration to athletes and spectators, and they are the face representing Busan. With the belief that ‘Cheering is performance itself,’ I ask you to take pride in representing Busan and contribute to the success of the Games with orderly and passionate cheering.”
