Busan, Your Home for Today and Beyond – Busan Metropolitan City Holds the 32nd Commemoration Ceremony for Busan Welfare Month

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that today (16th) at 3:30 PM, the city will hold a commemorative event at the Busan Social Welfare Center Grand Auditorium to celebrate the 26th Social Welfare Day and the 32nd Busan Welfare Month.

“Social Welfare Day” is a designated commemorative day aimed at fostering understanding of social welfare and encouraging the activities of social workers and other related professionals. It falls on September 7, the promulgation date of the National Basic Living Security Act, and has been celebrated annually since 2000. This year marks its 26th anniversary.

Since 1994, Busan Metropolitan City has designated September as “Busan Welfare Month,” holding commemorative events earlier than the national government. Since 2003, the city has also celebrated “Social Welfare Day” in conjunction with it.

The commemorative ceremony will proceed with approximately 200 participants, including Mayor Park Heong-joon, award recipients, welfare facility workers, and citizens, and will consist of awards for contributors to social welfare, a commemorative address, and congratulatory remarks.

A total of 50 awardees have been selected: six recipients of ministerial commendations in celebration of the 26th Social Welfare Day, 25 recipients of the Mayor’s commendations for the 32nd Busan Welfare Month, two recipients of commendations for contributions to promoting donation culture, and seven recipients of commendations from the Busan Social Welfare Council.

The city intends to raise the morale of welfare workers by presenting awards to individuals who have contributed to social welfare. As September is recognized as the month of welfare, the city expects the ceremony to become a meaningful occasion to encourage those who have made efforts toward the development of welfare in the Busan region.

In addition, on September 19, the 9th 051 Film Festival will be held under the theme “Coexistence.” This year’s festival will be hosted in collaboration with the 30th anniversary of the Busan International Film Festival.

At 2:00 PM, an awards ceremony and preview screening will take place at the outdoor stage in BIFF Square, Nampo-dong, followed by film screenings and a cinema talk at 4:30 PM at Megabox Theater No. 3 in Community BIFF Busan Theater.

Furthermore, from September 18 to 21, booths will be operated at Kirby Road in BIFF Square under the theme “We Buy Your Concerns,” providing a space where citizens’ concerns can be heard and shared while imagining welfare together.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “In order to create Busan, Your Home for Today and Beyond, it is most important to build a strong welfare safety net for the socially vulnerable. Our city has systematically strengthened welfare policies with the goal of improving citizens’ quality of life and reinforcing community care systems.”

He added, “We will continue to support welfare workers, who are at the forefront of making Busan, Your Home for Today and Beyond, so that they can work with pride. We will also keep listening to voices from the field and continuously supplement and advance related policies.”
