Busan Metropolitan City Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Korea Baseball Hall of Fame – A New Landmark in the Baseball City

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that on September 16 at 2 p.m., it held the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Korea Baseball Hall of Fame (Baseball Museum) at the project site in Cheonggwang-ri, Ilgwang-eup, Gijang-gun, and officially commenced construction.

Attendees at the event included Mayor Park Heong-joon, KBO Commissioner Heo Koo-yeon, Gijang County Governor Jeong Jong-bok, as well as city and county council members, figures from the baseball community, and local residents.

The project began in 2011 as part of the KBO’s “100th Anniversary of Korean Baseball” commemorative projects and was finalized through the joint hosting of Busan Metropolitan City and Gijang-gun.

Following this, Busan Metropolitan City, Gijang-gun, and the KBO signed a three-party implementation agreement. Under this agreement, the city is responsible for funding construction costs, Gijang-gun for providing the site, and the KBO for securing exhibition artifacts, thereby advancing the project in earnest.

The Korea Baseball Hall of Fame (Baseball Museum) is scheduled for completion in October 2026. With a total floor area of 2,998㎡, it will utilize more than 49,000 baseball relics owned by the KBO in its exhibitions.

The exhibition halls on the first floor will present the birth and growth of Korean baseball, from amateur beginnings to the professional era, organized by theme. The second floor Hall of Fame will showcase inductees and provide an immersive experience of historic games and records through AI-based media art. The third floor will house storage and office space.

Upon completion, the facility is expected to become more than just an exhibition space, but a place to commemorate the shining moments of Korean baseball, foster intergenerational exchange, and promote baseball culture.

Busan Metropolitan City anticipates that the establishment of the Korea Baseball Hall of Fame will strengthen Busan’s status as a true baseball city by linking with nearby attractions such as the Baseball Theme Park and the Osiria Tourism Complex, establishing itself as a comprehensive cultural asset combining sports and tourism.

Mayor Park Heong-joon emphasized, “The groundbreaking of the Korea Baseball Hall of Fame marks a starting point for a new century, celebrating 120 years of Korean baseball. We will make this a symbol of Korean baseball’s history and glory, as well as a new landmark of Busan, the baseball city.”
