The Joy and Humor of Tradition as a City Festival: Regular Performance of Dongnae Yaryu, “Dongnae Deulnoreum Festival” to Be Held

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will host the 60th anniversary regular performance of Dongnae Yaryu, the “Dongnae Deulnoreum Festival,” at 4:00 p.m. today (September 7) at the Oncheoncheon Café Street performance venue.

Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the event, it will be organized as an open urban stage where citizens can breathe together in a shared space. It will be hosted and organized by the Dongnae Yaryu Preservation Society (Chairperson Son Sim-sim).

In addition to Dongnae Yaryu, the essence of traditional mask performance, there will be invited performances of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage such as Jwasuyeong Eobangnori and Gyeongsan Jain Danoje Yeowonmu. The festival will also feature a mask exhibition, interactive activities, a photo zone with Malttugi for commemorative pictures, tasting of a large rice cake, on-the-spot prize drawings, and other diverse experiences. This event is expected to provide an opportunity to naturally enjoy traditional culture in everyday life.

Dongnae Yaryu, Korea’s representative mask performance, embodies the lives of ordinary people through humor and satire. It was designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 1967 and is currently being passed down by more than 70 successors, including skill holders, transmission instructors, and trainees.
