Busan Metropolitan City to Host the First Yeongnam Cyber Defense Competition, Alongside Cybersecurity Conference

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will host the “1st Yeongnam Cyber Defense Competition” to discover the next generation of security talent.

This event is co-organized by the city, the National Intelligence Service Branch, Korea Southern Power, Korea East-West Power, Korea Housing Finance Corporation, and Dong-A University, with sponsorship from the Information Security Talent Education Institute.

The preliminary round will be held online on September 25. Teams that advance through fierce competition will proceed to the final round, which is scheduled to take place on October 15 during the “2025 Busan Cybersecurity Conference.” The final round will serve as a stage for participants to directly compete in real-world hacking response capabilities.

Outstanding teams in the final round will receive awards presented directly by the Mayor of Busan Metropolitan City and other co-organizing institutions.

The city expects that this first-of-its-kind competition, jointly organized by multiple institutions, will become a new starting point for nurturing security talent in the Yeongnam region and revitalizing the cybersecurity industry.

Participation is open to university teams and youth teams, with each team consisting of no more than four members. Each team must include at least one member from Busan or Ulsan.

Applications must be submitted by September 19. Detailed information about the competition can be found via the pop-up window on the Korea Southern Power website (www.kospo.co.kr).

Meanwhile, the “2025 Busan Cybersecurity Conference,” where the final round will be held, will serve as a venue to share the latest security threat trends, response strategies, and innovative security technologies, bringing together domestic and international security experts, businesses, and public institutions.

This year’s conference will feature 14 lectures across four themes, along with diverse exhibitions and side events, including a technology (product) showcase by cybersecurity companies and public institutions, a hacking experience zone, and a digital experience hall. The final round of the “1st Yeongnam Cyber Defense Competition” will be held as one of the main programs of the conference, providing industry experts and visitors with a vivid demonstration of real-world cybersecurity competitions.

Cho Young-tae, Director General of the Administrative Management Bureau of the city, stated, “I hope this competition will go beyond being a mere hacking technology contest to raise overall security awareness in our society and become a platform for talent discovery. We will continue to further develop the Yeongnam Cyber Defense Competition in the future.”
