Busan, Gimhae, and Yangsan to Implement Free Metropolitan Transit Transfer Fares Starting September 19

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) and Gyeongsangnam-do (Gimhae City, Yangsan City) announced that starting on September 19, metropolitan transit transfer fares between jurisdictions (currently 500 KRW for adults) will be completely free of charge.

As part of the Busan–Ulsan–Gyeongnam Super Metropolitan Economic Alliance’s citizen-focused initiatives, Busan and Gyeongnam (Gimhae, Yangsan) have agreed to eliminate the metropolitan transfer fare, which has been in place since 2011. This achievement is expected not only to significantly reduce transportation costs for residents but also to increase public transit usage and promote the integration of living zones.

Until now, the additional metropolitan transfer fare incurred when transferring between buses or metros across Busan, Gimhae, and Yangsan had been pointed out as a factor increasing transportation costs and hindering regional integration.

With this change, citizens using Busan (buses, metro), Gimhae (buses), Yangsan (buses), and the light rail will be able to transfer between modes without paying additional charges.

The elimination of metropolitan transfer fares is expected to generate annual transportation cost savings of 5.5 billion KRW (based on Busan Metropolitan City’s public transit data). In particular, citizens commuting to work or school on a daily basis across regions are expected to save more than 10,000 KRW per month.

This benefit will be automatically applied to all transit card users, without the need for any separate application.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “Busan Metropolitan City and Gyeongnam Province (Gimhae and Yangsan) have joined forces to realize transportation welfare for citizens and to lead a transition toward eco-friendly transit. Going forward, Busan and Gyeongnam (Gimhae and Yangsan) will continue to improve the metropolitan transit system so that the two regions can function as a single living zone.”
