Busan Metropolitan City to Host the “2025 Climate Industry Expo Carbon Capture & Utilization Forum”

Busan Metropolitan City Mayor Park Heong-joon announced that the city will host the “2025 Climate Industry Expo Carbon Capture & Utilization Forum” (hereinafter “the Forum”) on August 28 at 4:00 p.m. in Exhibition Hall 1, Rooms 314–315 of BEXCO, under the theme “Commercialization Strategies for Carbon Neutrality and Carbon Capture & Utilization Technologies in the Southeastern Region as a Hub of the Arctic Shipping Route.”

The Forum will be attended by approximately 100 experts from academia, research institutions, and businesses related to CCU. It is jointly hosted by Busan Metropolitan City, Pusan National University, and the Busan Institute, and co-organized by the Busan Carbon Neutrality Support Center and KNN.

This Forum has been organized to address the changes in the global maritime logistics environment brought about by the opening of the Arctic shipping route, and to discuss strategies for the commercialization of CCU (Carbon Capture & Utilization), a key technology for green growth, along with industrial transition strategies in the southeastern region.

The keynote presentations will include:

• ●Kim Young-seok, Busan representative of the Korea RE100 Council, presenting on “Reevaluating the Role of CCU in the Arctic Shipping Route and the Southeastern Region.”

• ●Professor Kim Jeong-hyun of Pusan National University, presenting on “Eco-friendly Ships and CCU Technology for Carbon Neutral Oceans.”

• ●Han Sung-jong, former Director of the Offshore Plant Industry Support Center, presenting on “Establishing a Floating Platform for Supplying Eco-friendly Fuel (E-Fuel) to Arctic Route Vessels.”

For the panel discussion, Professor Kim Jung-rae of Pusan National University will serve as moderator. Panelists include Choi Yun-chan, Planning Team Leader of the Busan Carbon Neutrality Support Center; Kim Cheong-wook, CEO of Sunbo Unitech; Lee Kang-woo, CEO of Sunjin Environment; and Pyo Jung-kyu, News Director of KNN. The panel will discuss strategies for industrial transition in the southeastern region and the realization of carbon neutrality.

Busan Metropolitan City plans to use the Forum to refine industrial transition strategies in the shipbuilding and marine sectors based on CCU commercialization technologies, creating a foundation for Busan and the southeastern region to advance as global carbon-neutral maritime cities.

Park Dong-seok, Director General of the Advanced Industry Bureau, stated, “This Climate Industry Expo Carbon Capture & Utilization Forum is a crucial occasion to discuss the era’s pressing tasks of carbon neutrality and green growth in connection with the industries of the southeastern region. Busan will make every effort to grow as a global hub for CCU, hydrogen, and eco-friendly ship industries.”
