Busan Metropolitan City to Hold Academic Conference Re-examining the History of Culture and Arts in Busan during the Liberation Period

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold an academic conference on August 29 at 1:30 p.m. at the Busan Eurasia Platform under the theme “Busan during the Liberation Period through the Lens of Culture and Arts.”

This academic conference has been planned to re-examine the historical and cultural significance of Busan during the liberation space, a time when joy and conflict coexisted as the nation was freed from Japanese colonial rule.

The Academic Conference on the History of Culture and Arts in Busan during the Liberation Period will be conducted in two sessions.

In the first session, the following presentations will be made:

– Koo Mo-ryong (Korea Maritime and Ocean University), “Modern Maritime Characteristics and Busan’s Culture and Arts – One Perspective”

– Jeon Seong-uk (Dong-A University), “Liberation Space and Local Literature – Centered on the Literary Activities of Lee Ju-hong”

– Nam Young-hee (Busan Cultural Center), “The Identity of Music Culture in Busan during the Liberation Period – Uniqueness, Spontaneity, and Diversity”

– Kim Jeong-seon (Dong-A University), “A Cross-Section of Busan’s Art Circles in the Liberation Period – The Eye of Kim Jong-sik toward His Times”

– Kim Su-yeon (Pusan National University), “Film Activities in Busan during the Liberation Space – Focusing on the Art Film Company’s Work Haeyeon”

In the second session, chaired by Moon Jae-won (Pusan National University), all presenters and discussants will participate in a comprehensive discussion on the spatial and historical characteristics of Busan during the Liberation Period as reflected in cultural and artistic works.

Cho Yu-jang, Director General of the Culture Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, stated, “This academic conference has been organized to mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation, offering an opportunity to glimpse the times of Busan immediately following Liberation as reflected in cultural and artistic works. We hope that through the presentations and discussions re-examining the impact of artworks created by Busan citizens, who had just been freed from colonial rule, on cultural identity, research into the history of Busan’s culture and arts will be further revitalized.”
