For the Healthy Future of Children, Announcement of the Winning Design for the Construction of the “Busan Children’s Hospital”

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) and the Busan Medical Center (President Lee Se-yong, hereinafter referred to as “Busan Medical Center”) announced that the final winning design in the architectural competition for the “Busan Children’s Hospital Construction Project” has been selected.

The competition was held for the construction plan of the affiliated Children’s Hospital of Busan Medical Center on a site of approximately 1,600 square meters within the Medical Center premises in Geoje-dong, Yeonje-gu.

The review of submitted design proposals was conducted through the Public Procurement Service, and the proposal submitted by Gil Architects & Engineers Co., Ltd. was selected.

From August 5 to 6, 2025, design proposals were received, and on August 20, the review by the Public Procurement Service was completed. The selected company will proceed with architectural design work for 10 months after signing the contract.

The winning design received high marks for its organic layout plan and efficient use of space, considering the medical flow between the children’s hospital and existing facilities.

Busan Metropolitan City is pursuing the children’s hospital construction project with the aim of commencing construction in the second half of 2026, completing it in December 2027, and opening in 2028. Last October, KRW 22.5 billion in national funding was secured, and in November of the same year, the project conditionally passed the central investment review of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, thereby completing the necessary administrative procedures swiftly.

The total project cost amounts to KRW 48.6 billion. The hospital will have a building footprint of 1,600.55 square meters, with a total floor area of 8,340 square meters, comprising three underground levels and three above-ground levels, and will accommodate 50 beds.

The hospital will include five departments: Pediatrics, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine, Pediatric Orthopedics, and Pediatric Dentistry. A specialized medical center for emergency response and treatment of children with severe disabilities, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, is also planned.

To ensure smooth operation of the children’s hospital, Busan Metropolitan City is conducting a study with the Public Health and Medical Support Group to establish a medical operation plan.

Furthermore, in order to address the challenge of securing specialized pediatric and adolescent medical staff, the city plans to actively respond by establishing a public-private cooperative governance system with university hospitals.

The Busan Children’s Hospital will provide essential medical services that are difficult to offer at private medical institutions, such as inpatient treatment for children with chronic illnesses requiring hospitalization, and will also contribute to strengthening the functions of Busan Medical Center.

Jo Kyu-yul, Director General of the Citizens’ Health Bureau, stated, “Based on the winning proposal, we will prepare the optimal implementation design and create a patient-centered healing environment that includes treatment spaces, family rest areas, and child-friendly facilities. As the hospital construction has now officially begun, we will make thorough preparations for its medical operations, and we will do our utmost to provide reliable public healthcare services so that children can grow up healthy.”
