Busan Metropolitan City to Host the Global Data Hackathon “DIVE 2025”!

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will host the global data hackathon “DIVE 2025” at BEXCO over two days from August 23 to 24.
○ “DIVE*” is the name of a global data hackathon independently branded by Busan Metropolitan City. Following the successful launch of the inaugural event last year, this year’s edition has been greatly expanded in both participation scale and level.

• ●DIVE: Data Insights and Visualization Event
  ** Hackathon: A compound of “hacking” and “marathon,” where analysts, developers, designers, and others with an interest in a specific issue form teams to develop app services or business models within a limited time.

The competition program includes: ▲announcements of topics and evaluation criteria by presenting organizations ▲team activities such as data analysis and app service development ▲mentoring and evaluation by presenting organizations ▲stage presentations and overall awards for top teams ▲awards by presenting organizations.
○ This year, the top team from each presenting organization’s evaluation will advance to the finals, where the grand prize, first prize, and excellence awards will be determined. Award-winning teams will receive the Mayor of Busan Metropolitan City Award along with prize money. Separately, the top three teams from each presenting organization’s evaluation will receive certificates and prize money or goods. The total prize pool amounts to 10 million KRW.
○ In addition, teams will participate in two weeks of preliminary activities to explore data and topics in advance, adding depth to problem-solving.

This year’s competition drew more than 500 applicants from home and abroad, with 333 participants from 89 teams advancing to the finals after preliminary screening. The inclusion of numerous foreign participants highlights the rising national and international status of “DIVE.”
○ A total of 40 foreigners from 14 countries applied, including 10 who joined through an invitation from Dongseo University and formed teams with its students. Other participants include talents from Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Myanmar, Mongolia, and more.
○ Notably, about 300 applicants came from outside Busan, underscoring the nationwide interest and participation in this year’s competition.

In particular, a new category of “technology partners” has been established this year, where presenting organizations and sponsors collaborate, thereby strengthening cooperation with global technology leaders.
○ [Participation from nine presenting companies and public institutions] Three companies—Kakao Mobility, BNK Financial Group, and allDATA—along with six public institutions—Korea Housing & Urban Guarantee Corporation (HUG), Busan Port Authority, Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, Busan Public Corporations Council (covering transport, urban, tourism, facilities, and environment), Marine & Fisheries Public Data and AI Promotion Working Group, and Statistics Korea Southeast Regional Office—will provide their own datasets and propose related topics.
○ [Participation from three global technology partners] Amazon Web Services (AWS), Deloitte, and Salesforce—global leaders in their fields—will join as technology partners to provide participants with high-performance cloud infrastructure, analytical expertise, and project implementation training.
○ [Participation from ten sponsoring organizations] Dongseo University, Pusan National University, OKC, Smart M2M, Beyond, Medifund, DeepBrain, DMT Labs (interpretation), Neulpureun Technology, and Slash B Slash will offer one-on-one career counseling opportunities.

Jeong Nayoung, Director General of the Future Technology Strategy Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, stated, “Through ‘DIVE 2025,’ young talents from Korea and abroad will gather in Busan to spread a data-driven innovation ecosystem. Based on this, we will actively support Busan’s establishment as a global data hub city.”
