Busan Metropolitan City to Host Special Lecture by World-Renowned Garden Artist Hwang Jihae

Busan Metropolitan City Mayor Park Heong-joon announced that the city will invite world-renowned garden artist Hwang Jihae to deliver a special lecture on “The Identity of Korean Gardens and Their Potential for Global Expansion” on August 18 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Auditorium on the 1st floor of City Hall.

This special lecture has been planned to use gardens as a medium to realize citizens’ happiness, to restore relationships with nature in the midst of an ecological and environmental crisis, and to promote the spread of garden culture.

In this special lecture, Hwang Jihae will deliver an in-depth message on the themes of her vivid experience in creating Korean gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show, the ecological and environmental crisis, and the future value of art.

Hwang Jihae is a world-class garden designer and environmental artist who has won both the Gold Medal and Best Show Garden Award at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in the United Kingdom, one of the three major horticultural expositions in the world, and has continued to actively create works both domestically and internationally.

Any interested citizen may attend this special lecture free of charge, and pre-registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through the city’s Integrated Reservation System (https://reserve.busan.go.kr/index) starting at 9:00 a.m. on August 11. On-site registration will also be available for any remaining seats on the day of the lecture.

Meanwhile, the city has set the goal of becoming a “City in a Garden” as a core policy for realizing a happy city for citizens. It plans to add gardens to everyday living spaces, connect natural assets with gardens, and create spaces for communication where any citizen can easily enjoy and interact with gardens.

An Cheol-su, Director General of the Green City Bureau, stated, “Through this special lecture, we will create Busan’s gardens not merely as landscaping, but as works of art embodying the city’s philosophy and concepts,” adding, “We will make every effort to develop Busan into a garden city with unique charms and values, such as designating the Nakdong River National Garden, so that Busan’s gardens can represent K-Gardens.”
