Busan City to Provide Public Benefit Allowances for Fishers — A Stepping Stone for Sustainable Fisheries

Mayor Park Heong-joon of Busan announced that the City will begin its first Public Benefit Allowance Program for Fishers this year to enhance the public value of fisheries and stabilize the income of local fishers.

This initiative is being implemented alongside the Agricultural Public Benefit Allowance Program to support income stability and promote the sustainable development and public function of the fishing industry and fishing villages.

Eligible applicants must reside in Busan as of January 1, 2025, and be recipients of the Direct Payment for Small-Scale Fishery Households.

Each eligible household will receive KRW 600,000 annually, paid in full via a one-time bank transfer. The financial responsibility will be shared 60% by the City of Busan and 40% by each district or county.

In the case that two or more members of the same household (as per resident registration) qualify, only one person will be eligible. Corporations are not eligible, and applicants cannot receive both the agricultural and fisheries allowances — only one may be selected.

Applications will be accepted from August 1 to August 31, and can be submitted in person at the relevant district (gu/gun) office or town/district (eup/myeon/dong) community service center.

After applications are collected, the City will verify eligibility and conduct a review through the Public Benefit Allowance Committee. Payments are expected to be made in November or December.
