Busan Metropolitan City Temporarily Lifts "Car-Free Day" Restrictions During the Peak Summer Vacation Period

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will temporarily lift the Car-Free Day policy from today (July 28) to August 8 to accommodate participants during the peak summer vacation period.

The Car-Free Day program is a voluntary transportation culture campaign where participating vehicles are equipped with an RFID electronic tag and refrain from driving on one designated weekday (Monday through Friday).

Participants receive various benefits, including: ▲ a 10% discount on automobile taxes (up to 14% for lump-sum annual payment), ▲ a 50% discount on public parking fees, and ▲ a 20% discount on residential parking fees. Participants are also allowed to drive on their designated no-drive day up to four times a year for personal reasons.

During the temporary suspension period, Car-Free Day participants may drive on their designated no-drive days without it being considered a violation. However, certain operational rules of the program, such as restricted access to public institution buildings and the inapplicability of public parking fee discounts on no-drive days, will continue as usual.

The city decided to temporarily lift the Car-Free Day policy during this period to reflect the needs of participants, considering that this is typically a time of extreme heat and mass summer vacations by many companies.

Hwang Hyun-cheol, Director General of the Transportation Innovation Bureau, stated, “We deeply appreciate our citizens for participating in the Car-Free Day program even in the sweltering summer months, and we hope this temporary lift offers some measure of relief.”

Meanwhile, citizens who wish to participate in the Car-Free Day program can apply online through the website or visit any local eup/myeon/dong community center or district/county transportation office, regardless of their residence.
