Busan Metropolitan City Signs MOU with Related Organizations for the “Our Neighborhood Plastic Resource Recycling Group”

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that on July 21, it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Labor Force Development Institute for the Aged, Yuil Industry Co., Ltd., and Munhwa Gonggam Sujeong Cooperative for the “Our Neighborhood Plastic Resource Recycling Group” to promote the virtuous cycle of eco-friendly senior employment.

The signing ceremony was held on July 21 at 2:00 PM in the City Council’s medium conference room.

Attendees included the Director General of the Social Welfare Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, Kim Yang-jin, Director of the Busan-Ulsan Regional Office of the Korea Labor Force Development Institute for the Aged, Park Seung-hae, CEO of Yuil Industry Co., Ltd., and Kim Chae-ryeong, CEO of Munhwa Gonggam Sujeong Cooperative. They pledged to cooperate for the successful operation of the “Our Neighborhood Plastic Resource Recycling Group.”

Under the MOU:
• Busan Metropolitan City will provide administrative support for project implementation.
• The Korea Labor Force Development Institute for the Aged will be responsible for planning and managing the project.
• Yuil Industry Co., Ltd. will manage the final collection of waste plastic and provide reward incentives.
• Munhwa Gonggam Sujeong Cooperative will operate as the intermediate collection agency.

The “Our Neighborhood Plastic Resource Recycling Group” is a project linked to the Neighborhood ESG Center. It aims to establish a foundation for collecting waste plastic while creating sustainable carbon-neutral jobs.

The Recycling Group consists of participants from six senior clubs engaged in public-interest senior employment programs.

Participants collect waste plastic from demand sites such as metro stations and convenience stores. After sorting and cleaning the collected plastic, the intermediate collection agency transports and stores the materials at designated locations. The final collector then retrieves the materials and provides reward incentives to the senior participants.

Since 2024, the City has been operating the “Our Neighborhood Plastic Resource Recycling Group,” achieving tangible results such as senior job creation, promotion of carbon neutrality, and formation of a senior job fund. Specifically:
• 1,803 senior jobs were created
• 26 tons of waste plastic were collected
• 6 million KRW was raised for the senior job fund

Building on these outcomes, the project is establishing itself as a sustainable and eco-friendly senior employment initiative.

In particular, the fund will be used to offer reward incentives to Recycling Group participants.

Jeong Tae-gi, Director General of the Social Welfare Bureau, stated, “This agreement will enable us to build a close cooperation system with related organizations and complete Busan’s resource circulation system,” adding, “We will continue our efforts to establish Busan as a sustainable and eco-friendly city for senior employment.”
