Public Showcase of “Gayageum Sanjo, Gang Tae-hong Style” for the Preservation and Promotion of Busan’s Intangible Cultural Heritage

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold a public showcase of “Gayageum Sanjo, Gang Tae-hong Style” on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at the Busan Folk Art Center (Songyudang) in Dongnae-gu, as part of efforts to preserve and pass down its municipal intangible cultural heritage in its original form.

This performance will take place at the Busan Folk Art Center Songyudang, which serves as the city's transmission center for intangible cultural heritage, and is organized by the Preservation Society of Gayageum Sanjo, Gang Tae-hong Style.

In addition to the traditional Gayageum Sanjo, Gang Tae-hong Style, this event will feature a short ensemble performance prepared by transmission instructors, trainees, and designated bearers of municipal intangible cultural heritage, delivering the resonant sound of tradition across generations.

Designated as a municipal intangible cultural heritage in 1989, “Gayageum Sanjo, Gang Tae-hong Style” is known for its vigorous and dynamic rhythm, deep tonal color, and masculine character. It has been passed down through the traditional method of gujeonsimsu (oral transmission and heart-to-heart teaching).

Jo Yoo-jang, Director General of the Culture Bureau of Busan, stated, “Busan Metropolitan City supports public showcases for every designated municipal intangible cultural heritage each year in order to promote their preservation and development,” and added, “We hope this will be a meaningful opportunity to experience local intangible heritage up close and to share the value and beauty of traditional arts.”
