Mayor Park Heong-joon Meets with Joseph Y. Yun, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Korea

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that at 1:30 p.m. on July 9, Mayor Park met with Joseph Y. Yun, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Korea, at the Westin Josun Busan to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and mutual development between Busan and the United States.

Mayor Park began the meeting by saying, “Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to visit Busan,” and extended a warm welcome to Yun for his first official visit to Busan Metropolitan City.

Chargé d’Affaires Yun expressed appreciation for the hospitality and responded, “It’s been 15 years since I last visited Busan. The city has changed a lot. I think it has become a truly wonderful city thanks to your efforts, Mayor.”

Joseph Y. Yun was appointed as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Korea this January, following the inauguration of the Trump administration. He previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia and as the U.S. State Department’s Special Representative for North Korea Policy.

Mayor Park thanked Yun for his remarks and stated, “Busan is a global port and logistics city. Under our vision of becoming a global hub city, we are fostering five key sectors: logistics, finance, new industries, cultural content, and international tourism.” He requested continued interest and support from Yun.

Chargé d’Affaires Yun remarked, “Busan occupies an important position on the Korean Peninsula. I expect that exchanges and cooperation between Busan and the United States will expand.” He also noted that Busan plays a significant role in the recently emphasized Korea-U.S. shipbuilding cooperation.

In addition, Yun expressed interest in major city agendas, including the construction of Gadeokdo New Airport.

Mayor Park concluded the meeting by stating, “With deep ties to Korea and a wealth of diplomatic experience, I believe that Chargé d’Affaires Yun will contribute greatly to carrying forward the achievements of Korea-U.S. cooperation and to Busan’s leap forward as a global hub city.”
