Son Hee-jong, Researcher at Busan Water Authority, Receives the 35th Excellence in Science and Technology Paper Award

The Busan Water Authority (hereinafter referred to as “the Authority”) announced that Dr. Son Hee-jong, a researcher with the Authority, will receive the “35th Excellence in Science and Technology Paper Award” today (July 10) during the “2025 World Korean Scientists and Engineers Convention” hosted by the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST).

This marks Dr. Son’s third time receiving the award, following honors in 2007 and 2022.

This award recognizes his research on technologies that effectively remove algal blooms and their toxic substances in the purification process at municipal water treatment plants located downstream of the Nakdong River.

Earlier this year (January 2025), Dr. Son became the first public official to receive the “7th Academic Award from the Korean Society of Environmental Engineers,” an honor granted to researchers who have made significant contributions to the advancement of environmental engineering technology in Korea.

These outstanding achievements are supported by his 28-year career solely dedicated to developing water purification technologies at the Authority, during which he has published over 230 high-quality research papers in domestic and international academic journals.

Meanwhile, the Authority plans to continue supporting research in water purification to ensure these outstanding results are reflected in the operation of water treatment plants.

Kim Byung-ki, Director of the Busan Water Authority, stated, “Despite the poor raw water conditions in the lower Nakdong River, Busan produces safe tap water through world-class water purification technologies,” adding, “We will continue to spare no effort in supporting the development of purification technologies to ensure the production of safe and clean tap water.”
