Busan Metropolitan City Publishes Volumes 5 to 7 of the ‘Chronicles of Busan,’ Revised for the First Time in 30 Years

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced the publication of Volumes 5 to 7 of the Chronicles of Busan, which cover the city’s political, economic, social welfare, and healthcare history.

This publication marks the first revision and expansion in 30 years of the previous Chronicles of Busan, which consisted of four volumes completed between 1989 and 1991. Following the release of the comprehensive history volume last year, this year’s publication aims to document the sector-specific historical developments of Busan.

The newly published Chronicles of Busan are the result of collaboration among 28 contributing writers and 20 reviewers, including historians and expert researchers from various fields, ensuring the inclusion of accurate facts and reliable information.

• ●Volume 5 (Political History) outlines the transformation of local administrative and military systems in premodern times, the changes in administrative structures during the modern era, and the evolution of governmental organization and electoral systems post-liberation. It provides a comprehensive view of Busan’s political development.

• ●Volume 6 (Economic History) discusses the history of taxation systems and key industries in the premodern era, as well as the development of industry, commerce, trade, and finance in modern and contemporary times, offering readers a deep and broad understanding of Busan’s economic trajectory.

• ●Volume 7 (Social Welfare and Healthcare History) traces the changes in social security systems and welfare issues from ancient times to the present, as well as the development of healthcare institutions, policies, and systems over time, allowing readers to explore the evolution of Busan’s welfare and healthcare landscape.

Each volume features photographs, illustrations, maps, and diagrams to help readers easily grasp the historical developments in each field. Reference materials and sources are also included at the end of each book, enabling practical use by the general public.

The Chronicles of Busan were written to be accessible not only to specialists but also to the general public. They reflect the latest research findings across various academic fields—including history, political science, economics, social welfare, and medical science—and present a rational and objective narrative.

The books are available at public and university libraries across the country. They can also be accessed or downloaded via the official Busan Metropolitan City website (busan.go.kr > About Busan > Busan Regional History Library) and the website of the Busan Municipal History Compilation Committee (bssisa.com).

Jo Yoo-jang, Director of Culture at Busan Metropolitan City, stated,

“The Chronicles of Busan compilation project aims to establish the identity of Busan and provide citizens with a foundation to appreciate the city’s history and culture. I hope this newly published edition, which details the changes and developments in Busan’s politics, economy, social welfare, and healthcare, garners wide public interest.”

Following the release of the comprehensive and sectoral histories—Volumes 1 to 4 and 5 to 7—Busan Metropolitan City plans to publish three additional thematic volumes each year until 2029.
