Cybersecurity Competition Based on Regional Specialized Industry Scenarios in the Southeastern Region “2025 HACKSIUM Busan” to Be Held

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that the cyber defense competition “2025 HACKSIUM Busan,” based on regional specialized industry scenarios in the southeastern region, will be held for three days from July 15 to 17 at BEXCO, alongside “2025 K-ICT WEEK IN BUSAN.”

This event, serving as a flagship cybersecurity competition aimed at discovering and developing local talent, will bring together young cybersecurity experts from the region and across the nation to engage in intense technological contests and collaborative efforts, with the goal of cultivating practical white-hat hackers.

The competition is co-hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, Korea Internet & Security Agency, Busan Metropolitan City, and Gyeongsangnam-do, and is organized by Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency and Gyeongnam Technopark.

Each team must consist of four members, and eligibility requires at least two team members to either reside in or attend a school located in the southeastern region (Busan, Ulsan, or Gyeongnam).
In the preliminary round held online on June 28, participants showcased their skills by solving security vulnerability challenges across various fields such as Web, Pwnable, and Reversing, using the Jeopardy format.
The participant recruitment, which ran from May 30 to June 20, drew significant interest from university and graduate students nationwide with a passion for cybersecurity. After a fierce preliminary round, a total of 30 teams comprising 120 participants earned their place in the finals.

The finals will take place from July 15 to 17 over three days at BEXCO and will feature a live-fire format based on real-world scenarios.
Live-fire: A simulation training method where participants defend against real-time attacks within an actual system and network environment.
The competition will specifically simulate cyber defense scenarios reflecting regional specialized industries in the southeastern region, requiring participants to undertake hacking and defense missions in a simulated corporate environment.

The top six teams will be awarded certificates and various benefits.

• ●The Grand Prize (1 team) will receive the Minister of Science and ICT Award and an overseas training opportunity.

• ●The Excellence Award (1 team) will receive the Mayor of Busan Award and an overseas training opportunity.

• ●The Outstanding Award (2 teams) will receive the President of Korea Internet & Security Agency Award and a cash prize of KRW 3 million per team.

• ●The Encouragement Award (2 teams) will receive awards from the Presidents of Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency and Gyeongnam Technopark respectively, along with a cash prize of KRW 2 million per team.

Jung Na-young, Director General of the Future Technology Strategy Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, stated,
“We hope that the inaugural ‘2025 HACKSIUM Busan’ will serve as a valuable opportunity to identify and respond to cybersecurity vulnerability scenarios in the region’s specialized industries and to foster practical white-hat hackers capable of addressing them.”
She added, “We will continue to provide support to expand this event into a larger-scale cyber defense competition held in Busan.”
