Busan Launches Comprehensive Strategy for Maintenance and Development Ahead of Geumjeongsan National Park Designation

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it held a project kick-off briefing session for the “Basic Conceptual Plan for the Maintenance of the Geumjeongsan National Park Area” at 2:00 p.m. yesterday (July 2) in the 24th floor conference room of City Hall to prepare for development plans following the designation of Geumjeongsan as a national park.

The city has officially commenced the formulation of a comprehensive maintenance strategy for effective park management and regional development following the designation.

The briefing was attended by more than 20 participants, including officials from Busan Metropolitan City, Geumjeong-gu, the Korea National Park Service, local residents' representatives, and Beomeosa Temple affiliates. They shared project directions and key tasks while exchanging diverse perspectives.

This project is being pursued in line with the city’s effort to establish the nation’s first urban-type national park, aiming to create a complex cultural-ecological park where citizens can experience history, culture, and nature. It is also intended to lay the foundation for sustainable post-designation management and development.

Key project tasks include: ▲ In-depth and comprehensive review of the draft plan for Geumjeongsan National Park ▲ Development of plans to improve park facilities ▲ Formulation of maintenance and development strategies for surrounding areas, including Sanseong Village.

Ahn Chul-soo, Director General of the Green City Bureau, stated, “If Geumjeongsan is designated as a national park, we will do our utmost to ensure the resulting ripple effects extend beyond the park area to neighboring regions,” adding, “We will devise practical development plans through this project while broadly reflecting opinions from both citizens and experts.”

Meanwhile, the movement to designate Geumjeongsan as a national park began in 2005 as a long-standing aspiration of civil society and gained momentum in 2014 with a signature campaign involving 100,000 citizens. Major local procedures such as public reviews and hearings were completed by the end of last year. The project now awaits inter-ministerial consultations and deliberation by the National Park Committee, targeting official designation within this year.
