Royal Russell School, the First Foreign Educational Institution in Busan, Announces Winning Design Proposal

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) and the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) announced that the final winning entry of the design competition for the construction of Busan’s first foreign educational institution, the “Royal Russell School Busan Campus,” is the consortium proposal by Gangnam Architects Co., Ltd., titled “The Royal Russell Heritage.”

This project is a key policy initiative for Busan’s transformation into a global education city and also a mayoral pledge. Busan Metropolitan City is overseeing the entire project, while LH is managing the construction, including the design competition. The school will be operated by the prestigious British private school, Royal Russell School.

Five leading domestic architectural firms participated in the highly competitive design competition. The final winner was selected yesterday (June 30) through evaluations by a panel of external experts.

The winning proposal was highly praised for its functional efficiency, spatial symbolism, and deep understanding of educational environments.

The campus is planned to accommodate approximately 1,350 students from elementary through secondary levels in a building consisting of one basement floor and five above-ground floors. It will include outstanding amenities such as a swimming pool and a multipurpose auditorium.

Based on the selected proposal, the school will be constructed with a total floor area of 18,936 square meters. The design process is scheduled for completion in the first half of next year, followed by construction commissioning in the second half. The project aims for a smooth opening in August 2028.

Busan Metropolitan City is leading coordinated efforts through a task force composed of the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority, the Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education, LH, and the Royal Russell School task force, to ensure systematic and stable implementation of the project.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “The construction of the Royal Russell School Busan Campus will improve the educational and residential environment for foreigners, help prevent the outflow of talented domestic students, and attract global talent.” He added, “We will continue our efforts to establish Busan as a global education city.”
