Citizen-Led Garden Cultivation: Full-Scale Launch of the “2025 Nakdong River Garden Supporters” Program

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced the full-scale implementation of the “2025 Nakdong River Garden Supporters” program, through which citizens will directly cultivate and manage gardens, as part of efforts to secure National Garden designation for the Nakdong River Garden and to advance Busan into a globally recognized garden city.

The Garden Supporters will lead local garden culture by focusing on garden maintenance, interpretation services, and order maintenance during garden-related events. Rather than simply volunteering or attending events, participants will assume practical responsibilities in garden management and ecological education—allowing citizens to become central actors in the day-to-day care and development of garden spaces.

Key activities in 2025 include:

• ●Garden maintenance (weeding, environmental clean-up)

• ●Environmental-protection campaigns

• ●Family-garden creation projects

• ●Production of social-media content

These initiatives aim to establish a community-engagement model rooted in garden stewardship.

To encourage continued participation and motivation, a five-level grade system—Challenge → Passion → Growth → Fruition → Honor—will be applied. Participants accumulate mileage through activities and move up the grades accordingly, receiving greater responsibilities and rewards at higher levels. This structure is designed to build a sustainable and stable garden-management system.

Supporters will receive various perks commensurate with their activity points, such as commemorative souvenirs and priority enrollment in garden-related education programs.

Ahn Chul-soo, Director General of the Green City Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, stated, “The Garden Supporters program goes beyond mere participation; it will stand as a model of citizens directly cultivating and maintaining garden spaces, thereby realizing a vibrant garden culture.” He added, “We will continue to expand everyday garden culture through diverse citizen-participation programs.”
