Discovering and Understanding Myself… Special Lecture and Art Program for Out-of-School Youth

The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it held a special lecture and an art program under the theme of “Discovering and Understanding Myself” over two days, June 18 and 19, at the Busan Youth Support Center for Out-of-School Youth.

○ The program was offered through talent donations from Jeong Yoon, Director of the Youth Affairs Division, and artist Kim Jin-hee to help out-of-school youth establish their self-identity, deepen their self-understanding, clarify their values, and set a direction in life through self-portraits.

On June 18, the Director of the Youth Affairs Division gave a lecture titled “21 Values to Discover Myself.”

○ The lecture was conducted for 18 participants enrolled in a vocational capacity-building program that supports out-of-school youth preparing to enter society.

○ The lecture was structured into three parts—▲“Knowing Myself” ▲“Finding Myself” ▲“Creating Myself”—to explore 21 core values, better understand oneself, and reflect on the values necessary to live a life true to oneself.

○ The session also included guidance on entering university through the GED (General Equivalency Diploma), followed by a Q&A session.

On June 19, Kim Jin-hee, Vice Chair of the Korean Art Association and member of the Korea Contemporary Art Association, led an art program titled “A Time to Learn About Myself.”

○ The program was conducted for 14 members of the “Dream Drim Youth Group,” who work to raise awareness of out-of-school youth.

○ Through creating self-portraits, the program conveyed the message that living in the present with sincerity leads to the happiest life and a bright, hopeful future.

○ Kim Jin-hee has previously held 10 solo exhibitions featuring pop art works centered around themes such as hope, wishes, and dreams expressed as prayers to the starlight.

Busan currently operates a total of 17 Youth Support Centers for Out-of-School Youth (1 at the city level and 16 at district/county levels), each offering unique programs including academic reintegration, independence support, and self-development activities.

Park Seol-yeon, Director-General of the Women and Family Affairs Bureau of the City, stated, “We hope that through this special lecture and art program, out-of-school youth were able to better understand themselves, enhance their self-respect and confidence, and take steps toward a brighter future.” She added, “The City will continue to do its utmost to support out-of-school youth through various programs that help them grow into healthy members of society.”
