Dongguk University Hospital to Be Established in Busan! Full-Scale Development of the “Myeongji Integrated Medical Town” Brings New Hope to West Busan

The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony at 1:30 PM on June 19 in the City Hall video conference room with Dongguk University, MKH Co., Ltd., and the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority (BJFEZ) to promote the construction of the “Myeongji Integrated Medical Town.”

Attendees will include Mayor Park Heong-joon, Most Venerable Jinwoo (President of the Jogye Order), Venerable Donkwan (Chairman of Dongguk University Board), CEO Park Sung-ho of MKH Co., Ltd., the BJFEZ Commissioner, the President of Dongguk University, and the Director of Dongguk University Medical Center.

The Myeongji Integrated Medical Town will be a large-scale complex centered around a 500-bed Dongguk University General Hospital and will also feature meditation, cultural, residential, and commercial facilities, creating a multifunctional medical and wellness hub within Myeongji International New City.

This marks Dongguk University’s first major expansion into the Yeongnam region. The project will offer advanced medical services, modern living spaces, and convenient commercial infrastructure, providing a comfortable environment for patients, their families, and local residents.

The proposed Meditation Center will cater to the growing demand for mental health care and rest, creating a healing space where people can achieve mind-body balance.

Overview of Myeongji Integrated Medical Town

• ●Location: Myeongji-dong, Gangseo-gu, Busan (Plot No. 2130, Medical Zone – approx. 64,331㎡ or 19,459 pyeong)

• ●Scope: General hospital (Dongguk University), meditation and cultural facilities, commercial and residential integration

• ●Timeline: Groundbreaking in 2026, completion targeted for 2033

Once the MOU is signed:

• ●The City of Busan will provide administrative support for the development

• ●MKH Co., Ltd. will prioritize hospital construction and lead the town’s overall development

• ●Dongguk University will operate a general hospital-level medical facility

• ●BJFEZ will handle permits and administrative procedures related to the project

The area will also benefit from its proximity to existing developments:

• ●A British international school (Royal Russell and Wellington School)

• ●A British cultural village
  These are already located nearby, contributing to the realization of the 15-minute city vision promoted by Mayor Park.

The site is surrounded by large-scale residential complexes, hotels, and is adjacent to land allocated for foreign education institutions (approx. 38,000㎡)—making it an ideal location that has long attracted interest from healthcare institutions.

The Western Busan region, including Myeongji and Eco Delta City, has seen steady population growth but still lacks general hospital-level infrastructure, which has been a long-standing issue in terms of medical accessibility for local residents.

After years of effort and negotiation by the city and BJFEZ, the development company MKH Co., Ltd. and Dongguk University Hospital have officially committed to the project.

Mayor Park stated:

“The Myeongji Integrated Medical Town will help bridge the regional healthcare gap and create a new urban infrastructure model integrating high-quality meditation, culture, and residential spaces. We expect this to significantly improve the quality of life in West Busan and elevate the city’s overall urban competitiveness.”
